These are some of the important questions that music raises, and each year, Pacific Symphony, led by Music Director Carl St.Clair, attempts to shed light on the answers by exploring a different facet of American music through the American Composers Festival (ACF). This year's ACF spotlights organ music through four highly acclaimed organists and the splendor of the king of instruments-in this case, the one-of-a-kind William J. Gillespie Concert Organ, located in the Renee and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. Built from steel, tin, oak, poplar, maple, lead and carbon fiber, the astounding instrument found in the Symphony's concert hall required three years and 42,000 hours of labor by a team of organ builders at C.B Fisk in Gloucester, Mass., before making its debut with Pacific Symphony in 2008.

Matthias Pintscher, music director of the acclaimed French contemporary music group Ensemble Intercontemporain, makes his highly anticipated Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO) conducting debut, leading works by Beethoven, Schoenberg, Ravel and Faure on Saturday, February 20, 2016, 8 pm, at the Alex Theatre, Glendale, and Sunday, February 21, 2016, 7 pm, at UCLA's Royce Hall.  Pintscher, noted for conducting with "finesse and focus" (The Guardian), leads Beethoven's less often-performed Symphony No. 8 in F major, a compact and upbeat work notable as the composer's shortest symphony; Schoenberg's lush Chamber Symphony No. 2, written over a 33-year period from 1906 to 1939; Faure's elegant and graceful Pavane; and Ravel's complete Ma mere l'oye ("Mother Goose"), originally written for piano four-hands and later expanded for orchestra.
