University of Houston alumnus and rising classical music star Kenny Broberg has accomplished what only a handful of American pianists have done before - win a medal at the International Tchaikovsky Competition. Arguably the most esteemed piano competition in the world, Broberg finished third to receive the bronze medal and a $10,000 cash prize. He was the only American to compete in the finals. The Tchaikovsky began in 1958 and is held every four years in Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia.

Musicals take on many forms and The Marvelous Wonderettes, currently playing at Florida Studio Theatre under the direction of Jason Cannon. succeeds in providing its audience with a worry-free stroll down memory lane.

Perhaps it's the lofty, Shakespearean-style introduction, the outsized musical selection ("Flight of the Valkyrie" is used more than once), or the references to one of the most devastating dictatorships in modern history, but 'The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui' sets impossibly high expectations for itself and promptly fails to come even fractionally close to those expectations. But, even putting those comparisons aside, the production falls disappointingly flat.

Jeannie C. Riley, best known for her worldwide mega hit, “Harper Valley P.T.A.” has a new single heading to radio todayvia CDX. The song is her soulful and very personal version of “Me and Bobby McGee,” written by Kris Kristofferson and Fred Foster that became a posthumous No. 1 hit in 1971 for the late Janis Joplin.

McCarter will welcome a group of esteemed and emerging playwrights and theater artists to Princeton for the Sallie B. Goodman Artists' Retreat. The annual retreat in June is a centerpiece of McCarter's LAB, a platform and creative incubator devoted to ongoing theatrical development and artist cultivation. This upbeat musical opens on Springfield High's prom in 1958, which has unexpectedly lost its musical act. To save the night, four female friends-Betty Jean, Cindy Lou, Missy, and Suzy-take the stage to entertain their classmates in four-part harmony. The Marvelous Wonderettes starts May 29 in FST's Gompertz Theatre.

Emerging Cameroonian artist Blick Bassy debuts new single “Mpodol” today. The song honors former Cameroonian leader Um Nyobé, translating to “He who carries the voice of his people.” The single precedes Bassy's forthcoming album 1958 which is set for release on June 21 via No Format/Tôt ou Tard/IDOL.
