Berkeley Playhouse continues its fifth season with the Tony Award-winning GUYS AND DOLLS. Jon Tracy (Berkeley Playhouse, Aurora Theatre Company, Shotgun Players, San Francisco Playhouse, Magic Theatre) helms this musical from the Golden Age of Broadway, featuring a cast of 22, and choreography by Chris Black (Berkeley Playhouse, Aurora Theatre Company). GUYS AND DOLLS plays March 21 through April 28 (Press opening: March 23) at the Julia Morgan Theatre in Berkeley. Houston Grand Opera opened their Winter Repertory offerings with an impressive and rousing production of Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II's iconic book musical SHOW BOAT. The musical historically changed the face of American Musical Theatre and introduced a genre of entertainment that many feel OKLAHOMA perfected and solidified. Despite it's classification as a musical, the show's score is incredibly operatic and requires many classically trained voices to effectively pull off a production.

The Picture Show at Bay Street Theatre, sponsored by Peconic Landing continues with classic films this winter and spring. All films start at 8 pm. Tickets are $7 at the door and include a small box of popcorn. In the crisp, morning hours on December 27, 2012 I got the chance to speak with Lara Teeter, who will be playing Cap'n Andy in the upcoming production of SHOW BOAT at Houston Grand Opera. David Zinman will replace Daniel Harding, who has had to withdraw due to illness, to lead the Orchestra in Sibelius's Symphony No. 3;; Schumann's Piano Concerto, with pianist Jan Lisiecki in his Philharmonic debut;; and Sibelius's Symphony No. 7 tonight, December 13, 2012, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, December 14 at 11:00 a.m.; and Saturday, December 15 at 8:00 p.m.

The Equity professional East Lynne Theater Company presents this screwball comedy from tonight, September 19 through October 13, with an 8:00 p.m. curtain. It is the usual Wednesday through Saturday schedule, except there is no show on Wednesday, October 3, and an added show on Sunday, October 7 at 7:30 p.m. On Wednesday, September 19 is an after-show opening night party at Aleathea's Restaurant at The Inn of Cape May, 7 Ocean Street, where patrons have the opportunity to mingle with actors and fellow theater lovers while indulging in complimentary hors d'oeuvres. There is an after-show Q&A with the cast and director on Friday, September 28, and on Friday, October 12, is an American Sign Language interpreted performance.

MY ONE AND ONLY is what I like to call a "retrofit" musical, appropriating tunes from the Gershwin brothers (Ira and George, of course) catalog, while creating a book (Peter Stone and Timothy Mayer) that incorporates familiar elements from 1927, the year it's set in. That being said, it's a slick and flashy excursion into fun that's "all talking, all singing, and all dancing". This final production of the season for Stages St. Louis is a terrifically convivial ride utilizing the old "boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back" plot that so many musicals, particularly from that era, rely on.

Join Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra tonight, May 20 at 6:30 pm for their 23rd Annual Silent Film Gala. The evening will feature Harold Lloyd's films, The Kid Brother (1927) and High and Dizzy (1920,) accompanied by the LA Chamber Orchestra conducted by Carl Davis. Music for The Kid Brother was commissioned by Thames Television for Channel 4. Newly composed music by Carl Davis for High and Dizzy will have its U.S. premiere on May 20.

It is truly gratifying to experience a quintessential musical like Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein's Tony-winning, Showboat -- especially when it has a great cast like CM PAC's current production. Initially presented in 1927, this Noel Ruiz directed production has performances through May 20th. The story follows the lives of the patrons of the Cotton Blossom, a Mississippi River performance boat over a span of nearly fifty years as they endure the trials of everlasting love and racial prejudice.
