'If music be the food of love, play on.' Even before the invention of the musical comedy (more on that later), William Shakespeare knew the importance of music in telling stories on stage. For our March feature, my colleague Jeff Walker and I thought that instead of marking the Ides of March with songs about murder, betrayal, and fate, we would focus on the synergy between showtunes and Shakespeare.

Hubbard Street Artistic Director Glenn Edgerton and Kathryn Humphreys, Director of the organization's Youth, Education and Community Programs, are delighted to offer a wide range of diverse dance opportunities for young people for a fifth consecutive summer. Early-Childhood, Primary, Secondary, and Intensive categories both align with Hubbard Street Youth Dance Program classes held during the academic year, and allow the families of first-time students to easily find the Youth Summer Camps best-suited to their needs. Technique-specific workshops provide space for continuing progressive study, while interdisciplinary and creative camps focus on self-expression. Hubbard Street's "a la carte" registration for Youth Summer Camps facilitates "mix-and-match" scheduling, making movement practice accessible to young dancers of all ages, skill levels and interests.

The production of Chekov's 'The Seagull,' now on at the Berkley Street Theatre, is an uneven disappointment. It fails to engage. Like Theatre 20's production of Stephen Sondheim's 'Company,' presented in the same venue last year, this Crow's Theatre production does not deliver on its exciting promise.

Pamela Lewis (a.k.a. Champagne Pam), the 2013 BroadwayWorld New York Cabaret Award winner for "Best Female Vocalist" (for her show Daddy's Little Girl), performed her new solo cabaret show, New York State of Mind: The Songs of Billy Joel, in front of a rowdy, revved-up, packed house at the Metropolitan Room on Friday and Saturday, January 16 and 17. The singer with champagne-colored streaks in her long brown hair, Lewis embodies cool. And hot. She's a brassy chick from Long Island who knows who she is and she wants to party with you. In this show, she celebrates her roots, singing the songs of another Long Islander she grew up loving, first for his tuneful pop melodies and later for his words. It's cool when a woman sings an entire show of songs written by a man, doesn't fear using the "wrong" pronouns, and puts her own spin on them by changing the feel, the tempo, and the arrangements. Pamela Lewis does all that with verve and then some in this show.
