TV Preview: SPIDER-MAN's Christopher Tierney on WCBS2 News - Preview to Air on Evening News with Couric

WCBS TV's Dana Tyler has scored the first interview with SPIDER-MAN's Christopher Tierney, which will air on WCBS news on January 3, 2011 at 11pm EST. The CBS EVENING NEWS WITH KATIE COURIC (6:30 PM, ET) will broadcast an excerpt tonight from WCBS-TV News Anchor Dana Tyler's exclusive interview with Christopher Tierney, the actor seriously injured the Broadway musical, 'Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark.' This is Tierney's first interview since falling 30 feet during the show's December 20 performance, suffering a skull fracture and cracked vertebrae.

BroadwayWorld.com was the first to report back on December 2 when Natalie Mendoza, who plays the lead role of Arachne in SPIDER-MAN: Turn Off the Dark had received a concussion and the role was to be played in her absence by understudy America Olivo. Now the New York Times is reporting that the actress is leaving the production, 'as an artistic loss and embarrassing blow to the production' and that lawyers are fine-tuning the language to explain her departure. The paper reports that she last performed in the show on Monday, December 20th, the same performance which had the injury to her fellow performer and friend Christopher Tierney. TV: Today's SPIDER-MAN Safety Press Conference

Assemblyman Rory Lancman (Chair, Assembly Subcommittee on Workplace Safety), Senator Eric Adams, Assemblyman Richard N. Gottfried ( who represents the theater district) today held a press conference in front of the Foxwood Theater, the home of 'Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark,' to discuss the safety issues surrounding the production and the need for proper safety regulations and oversight of aerial performances. Joining them were representatives from Actors' Equity (Paige Price, First Vice President; and Carol Waaser, Acting Executive Director).

Twitter was flooded last night shortly after 10:40 PM with messages from audience members at SPIDER-MAN, with word that an actor fell during the middle of Act 2 when a cable snapped. The show was first put on hold, and then cancelled as ambulances arrived on the scene. This morning, the actor has been identified as aerialist Christopher Tierney, who is reported to be in stable condition. At 11:29 AM, Equity has released a statement that 'Actors' Equity Association is working with management and the Department of Labor to ensure that performances will not resume until back-up safety measures are in place.'

As viewers and now non-viewers alike know, Conan O'Brien has enjoyed parodying Julie Taymor's production of SPIDER-MAN regularly on his late night show. In fact, as BroadwayWorld has previously reported, the team behind the Broadway musical SPIDER-MAN hasn't been amused by the constant late-night jokes about the show and recently sent bouquet of flowers from the production which said, 'We hope you enjoy the flowers.
