The Martha Graham Dance Company performed an intimate performance this week as part of the Company's “Graham Deconstructed” Series and Performa 13. The evening, entitled “Surreal Graham,” consisted of two pieces that exemplify the aura of surrealism, which sought to resolve the previously contradictory conditions of dream and reality through uncensored, unfiltered, and unconscious expression. Graham is perhaps the ultimate surrealist choreographer in that her work was ridden with shocking, sexual, and even violent undertones, themes that were popular amongst surrealist artists such as Salvador Dalí and René Magritte.

ALL IS CALM: THE CHRISTMAS TRUCE OF 1914 is a smartly conceived acapella musical by Peter Rothstein that chronicles the stunning events that occurred on Christmas Day 1914. It mixes short narrative bursts with 23 songs from the period, and it's never dull or contrived. For me, the hearty vocals produced by the cast are a sheer delight to listen to. Mustard Seed Theatre has put together a wonderful production that's a real treat for the upcoming holidays.

The American Symphony Orchestra's upcoming season, full of discoveries and revolution begins with New York Avant-Garde on October 3, 2013. In partnership with the New-York Historical Society's new exhibition and catalog, the ASO recreates the fall-out in music of the famous New York Armory visual arts show of a century ago, in 1913.

Multi-award winning performer, Rita Moreno, will take the stage on Saturday, August 17 for an exclusive benefit performance in honor of the 10th anniversary of the Napa Valley Opera House. Moreno is one of only nine performers ever to win all four major artistic awards, including an Academy Award, Emmy, Grammy and Tony. This is a special performance as Moreno wowed the Opera House audience in 2003 when the historic building reopened to the public after years of renovation.

MY MOTHER'S KEEPER, written by Jane Press and directed by Robin McKee, is a highly autobiographical memory play that moves fluidly back and forth between 1914 when an event involving Press' great-grandmother sets off a cycle of damage and dysfunction, and the present. While the humor of this play may be Jewish, the experience of being part of a big, crazy family is universal.

Eugene O'Neill, along with such writers as Anton Chekhov, Henrik Ibsen and August Strindberg, transformed western theatre. They transitioned the stage from a place for escapist ideas into a mecca for the examination of real life problems. The quartet laid the foundation for what is now known as 'the modern theatre' and laid the groundwork for such luminaries as Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams and William Inge.

Jane Pritchard, the curator of the dance collection at London's Victoria and Albert Museum, was responsible for much of the success of its 2009 Exhibition, Sergei Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes. This exhibition, or parts of it, continues to travel around the world. Anyone with an interest in the history of ballet owes it to themselves to get even a small glimpse of what Ms. Pritchard and her colleagues assembled for that magnificent event.

Canadian folk songstress Melanie Doane has been away from the theatre for many years pursuing a very successful solo career. She returns to the Toronto stage in the Mirvish production of WAR HORSE, currently on stage at the Princess of Wales Theatre. David Mirvish is delighted to announce the 2011-12 Mirvish Subscription Theatre Season. The subscription season consists of seven shows that will be performed in four different downtown Toronto theatres. In addition, there are four shows off-subscription and many other shows at the Sony Centre that will be available to Mirvish subscribers on a priority basis and/or at special prices.

Formerly a project of the Ontological-Hysteric Theater, the Incubator Arts Project supports independent, experimental performing artists through a series of programs aimed at offering production opportunities and guidance with long-term growth and artistic sustainability. The West Side Story Suite began this weekend and is presented by the National Ballet of Canada. It is part of Luminato, The Toronto Festival for the Arts and Creativity. While it is primarily dance - the show features vocals from seven performers, including up and comers Michael Hughes and Gabi Epstein who talk to BWW about what someone can expect if they venture out to the ballet.

Ira Hauptman's 'Partition,' now at Baltimore's Spotlighters Theater, is aptly titled, as the playwright explores the partitions that separate us from each other, but also cause divisions within our very selves.
