On October 23, 25, and 26, the Symphony welcomes back Conductor Laureate Hans Graf in his 2014-15 Season debut with the Houston Symphony in Ravel and Debussy. A program mixing French artistic imagery, evocative melodies and jazzy piano sounds, Ravel and Debussy promises a unique take on the two prominent Impressionist composers. Mr. Graf pairs the whimsical style of Ravel's Mother Goose with Debussy's famously nostalgic Images trilogy. The Symphony will also join forces with the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH) on Images, enhancing the musical landscapes with imagery from their upcoming Monet and the Seine: Impressions of a River exhibit. Local favorite and Professor of Piano at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music, Jon Kimura Parker will delight audiences with Ravel's jazzy Piano Concerto.

Step into musical storytelling at its best on October 17, 18 and 19 with the Houston Symphony's performance of Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade. Young Czech conductor Jakub Hr?ša joins with the Symphony once again for a concert that will captivate and seduce with vibrant tales of Arabian nights. Let your imagination soar as dazzling symphonic sounds portray Scheherazade's stories that captured the Sultan's curiosity and admiration. Hr?ša has been touted by the Los Angeles Times as "an engaging maestro…summoning crispness and expressive robustness." Plus, hear world-renowned young Russian pianist and winner of the 2010 Queen Elisabeth Competition Denis Kozhukhin perform Prokofiev's virtuosic Piano Concerto No. 2.

From September 4-14, 2014, Houston Ballet launches its 45th season with the company premiere of John Neumeier's three-act ballet A Midsummer Night's Dream. The ballet is based on Shakespeare's lighthearted play of the same name and follows the hijinks and hilarity that ensues when a well-intentioned plan with a love potion goes awry. Created in 1977, A Midsummer Night's Dream has served as Mr. Neumeier's calling card, being seen as one of his most joyous and popular creations. Houston Ballet is the first American ballet company to perform the famous work and it is the first piece by Mr. Neumeier to enter the Houston Ballet repertoire.

The score was ground-breaking with its new uses of meter, tonality, rhythm, and dissonance creating a new abrasive orchestral sound. Stravinsky described the piece as "a musical-choreographic work, [representing] pagan Russia ... unified by a single idea: the mystery and great surge of the creative power of Spring'. Over time, The Rite of Spring has become widely viewed as the single most important piece of 20th century symphonic literature that ushered in a new era of musical composition.
