'Boston harbor, 1895, a gray morning, the deck wet, the iron all beaded with frost, all the longshoremen in heavy pea-jackets, the whole ship in a bustle, and the favored first-class passengers just leaving. Among the hundreds of people going and coming, pushing and hauling, stands Nora, an Irish girl, her knitted hood already covered with frost, and tears hanging from her black eyelashes.

Review - A Night At The Operetta: It's Outta Here!
by Kristin Salaky - Jul 18, 2008

On the night when baseball's all-stars were blasting dingers into the bleachers of Yankee Stadium, the cast of Scott Siegel's A Night At The Operetta, was having their own home run derby on the stage of Town Hall, knocking melodies by Victor Herbert, Sigmund Romberg and Rudolf Friml out of the park.  And in both cases, the crowd frequently went nuts.

Review - On The Town: Subways Are For Seeking
by Kristin Salaky - Nov 23, 2008

Penned by a pair of downtown revue writers (Betty Comden and Adolph Green), composed by a wunderkind New York Philharmonic conductor (Leonard Bernstein), choreographed by a Ballet Theatre soloist (Jerome Robbins) and originally directed by musical comedy master George Abbott, there's never been a musical on Broadway that mixes highbrow and lowbrow with such a wondrous cacophonous clash as On The Town.

REVIEW: Musical Theatre West's Pleasant MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS (Ends 11/15)
by Michael L. Quintos - Nov 3, 2009

LONG BEACH, CA-There was once a simpler time in America, specifically at the turn of the 20th century, when hope and tradition were the norm and the promise of progress was tangible in the age of new mechanized machinery. That antiquated era of traditional family dynamics is the setting for MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS, playing through November 15 at Long Beach's Musical Theatre West. Set within the proper backdrop of the Missouri Landscape as its citizens prepare for the arrival of the 1904 World's Fair, this family-friendly musical has charm, sweetness, and abundance of 'old-fashioned-ness' that it wears proudly on its sleeve with no amount of irony or a winking acknowledgment of its current modern audience. The show is filled with appeal but lacks the kind of edge or 'wow' factor that is so much more present in material that succeeded it. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it's not exactly it's best asset either.
