New Wallis Annenberg Center to Host Community Day, 10/27
by BWW News Desk - Oct 22, 2013

The new Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts is holding a Community Day celebration on Sunday, October 27, 2013 from 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. to celebrate the delivery of the new venue to Beverly Hills and the greater Los Angeles community. The Wallis transforms the Beverly Hills city block, facing Santa Monica Boulevard, between Crescent and Canon Drives, into the first performing arts center to be built in Beverly Hills: a vibrant arts destination and a major cultural and education hub for audiences of every age, with two distinct, elegant buildings: the renovated historic 1934 Italianate-style Beverly Hills Post Office, now the Paula Kent Meehan Historic Building, and a new, contemporary 500-seat, state-of-the-art Bram Goldsmith Theater.

New Hampshire Theatre Project's 25th Season to Open with SIX CHARACTERS IN SEARCH OF AN AUTHOR, 11/15-12/1
by Tyler Peterson - Oct 3, 2013

New Hampshire Theatre Project's 25th Anniversary Season opens with Six Characters in Search of an Author, written by Luigi Pirandello. With its startling originality, Six Characters is now considered one of the most influential plays in the history of world literature, although it incited audience rioting at its 1921 debut in Rome. In what begins as a realistic play, six figures arrive who make the extraordinary claim that they are the incomplete but independent products of an author's imagination - "characters" the author abandoned when he couldn't complete their story. These "characters" have come in search of someone who will give them the fullness of literary life. Furthermore, these "characters" outrageously claim that they are more "real" than the actors who eventually want to portray them. Pirandello showed how illusion mixes with reality and how people see the same thing in many different ways. Considered the forerunner of Theatre of the Absurd, Pirandello was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1934.

BWW Reviews: Island ETC's YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN is Frolicking, Frivolous, and Entertaining
by David Clarke - Jul 29, 2013

As usual, the summer is chockfull of mind numbing entertainment. Hollywood releases action packed blockbusters. Television channels flood the airwaves with brainless reality shows and thinly written dramas. Everywhere you turn, there are offerings of entertainment for the sake of entertainment. Summer musicals are no exception, and Galveston's Island East-End Theatre Company (ETC) is presenting Mel Brook's glitzy, splashy musical YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN to pad out this summer. Following the wild success of THE PRODUCERS, Mel Brooks reassembled his creative team and jumped back into the saddle of creating theatrical musicals. YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN had it's pre-Broadway try-out in Seattle in 2007, ran on Broadway from November 8, 2007 through January 4, 2009, and has had enjoyed two successful national tours across the United States.

Presented in the striking Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts and other venues on Bard College's bucolic Hudson River campus, the seven-week festival opens on July 6 with the first of two performances of A Rite (2013) by the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company and SITI Company, and closes on August 18 with a party in Bard's beloved Spiegeltent, which returns for the full seven weeks. Complementing the Bard Music Festival's exploration of “Stravinsky and His World,” some of the great Russian-born composer's most captivating compatriots provide key SummerScape highlights. These include the first fully-staged American production of Sergey Taneyev's opera Oresteia; the world premiere of an original stage adaptation of Mikhail Bulgakov's seminal novel The Master and Margarita; and a film festival titled “Between Traditions: Stravinsky's Legacy and Russian Emigré Cinema.” Together, SummerScape's offerings will continue Bard's yearlong tenth-anniversary celebrations for the Frank Gehry-designed Fisher Center, which commence with a month of special performances in April.

Review - Merrily We Roll Along: Back To Before
by Ben Peltz - Feb 13, 2012

The original Broadway cast album of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth's Merrily We Roll Along is one of those handful of recordings - like Mack and Mabel and Candide - that a musical theatre lover can listen to hundreds of times without hearing a clue as to why the show flopped.  The quick answer, and usually the most unfair one, is 'the book.'  More often, though, the more complete answer is ambition.
