The world premiere of The Tallest Tree in the Forest, a new work about the life of African-American performer and activist Paul Robeson, written and performed by Daniel Beaty and directed by Moises Kaufman, opens Friday, September 6 at Kansas City Repertory Theatre. The show runs through September 28 at the Rep's downtown theatre Copaken Stage, 13th and Walnut Streets.

Music Director Alan Gilbert opens the New York Philharmonic's 2013-14 season with the Opening Gala concert, headlined by cellist Yo-Yo Ma, Wednesday, September 25, 2013, at 7:30 p.m. Mr. Gilbert will conduct Mr. Ma and the Orchestra in two works by Argentinian composers: the World Premiere of Octavio Brunetti's arrangement, commissioned by the New York Philharmonic, of a suite from Astor Piazzolla's La serie del Ángel, and Osvaldo Golijov's Azul, composed for the eminent cellist. The program opens with Ravel's Alborada del gracioso and closes with Bolero, two pieces that reflect the French composer's fascination with Spain. The concert will be telecast nationally on Live From Lincoln Center at a later date, and Classical 105.9 FM WQXR at 7:30 p.m.

The Joffrey Ballet kicks off its 2013-14 "Masters of Dance" season with a special addition to its home engagement line-up, a one-weekend-only program titled "Russian Masters" celebrating the centennial of Vaslav Nijinsky's ground-breaking 1913 ballet Le Sacre du Printemps (The Rite of Spring), alongside George Balanchine's Allegro Brillante and two works byYuri Possokhov, the Chicago Premiere of Adagio and the return of his 2011 Joffrey commission, Bells. These four powerful works by Russian choreographers and composers are presented in four performances only in the Joffrey's home venue, the historic Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University in downtown Chicago at 50 E. Congress Parkway, September 19 - 22.

Along with the discovery of 5,000 historic theater scores, buried in an attic in Washington, D.C., Founder and Artistic Director of The Paragon Ragtime Orchestra Rick Benjamin was stunned when he came upon George Gershwin's long-lost Broadway score for La La Lucile, which hasn't been performed since 1919. The piece will make its premiere in Hackettstown this month at the Centenary Stage Company's Jammin' in July Summer Concert Series.

Leslie B. Cutler, who directed of hundreds of productions over a 50 year period at the storied Kenley Players in Ohio and other stock venues and is widely believed to have directed more stars onstage than anyone else in show business, died of congestive heart failure at the St.Luke's - Roosevelt Hospital in Manhattan on Saturday, May 18th, 2013. He was 93.

St. James Theatre and Theatre Royal Bath Productions present the Ustinov Studio production of The American Plan by Richard Greenberg, directed by David Grindley. The production will transfer to the St. James Theatre from Tuesday 2 July to Saturday 10 August 2013, with press night on Monday 8 July at 7pm. The production received its UK premiere earlier this year at the Ustinov Studio, Bath. Booking opens for members and friends of the St. James Theatre on Monday 6 May and to the general public on Wednesday 8 May 2013.

Rehearsals began this week in Atlanta, GA, for the Alliance Theatre's production of ZORRO, a thrilling new musical. Zorro, 'the fox,' was created in 1919 by the writer Johnston McCulley for his serialized novel 'The Curse of Capistrano,' and went on to be immortalized in print, on film, in television and even video games.
