Happy Birthday Arthur Laurents! Laurents' first play, Home of the Brave, opened on Broadway in 1945, followed by many others. He wrote his first musical, West Side Story, in 1957, followed by Gypsy and others. His first screenplay was The Snake Pit in 1948, followed by others including Rope, Anastasia, The Way We Were and The Turning Point. His own play, Invitation to a March in 1960, was the first of several he directed. I Can Get It for You Wholesale in 1961 was the first musical he directed, followed by others including La Cage aux Folles and Gypsy with Angela Lansbury, then Tyne Daly and most recently, Patti LuPone. He pased away in May 2011.

Sarasota Opera's Executive Director Richard Russell has announced that the company has appointed Stacy Ridenour as its new Director of Development in an executive search process guided by Arts Consulting Group. As Director of Development, Ms. Ridenour will supervise a department working toward an annual fundraising goal of $2.75 million and creating a funding strategy to support the company's future plans. She will officially assume her new role on July 1, 2013.

Sarasota Opera has announced its 2013 - 2014 Fall and Winter programming which will mark the company's 55th consecutive season of performing grand opera on the Florida gulf coast. Highlights will include the return of some of Sarasota Opera's most acclaimed productions, the Sarasota Opera premiere of Verdi's Jerusalem as part of the ongoing Verdi Cycle, and the debut of new concerts to the Sarasota Opera Concert Series.

Enrollment is now open for young people ages 8 -18 for Sarasota Youth Opera's 2013 Summer Camp to be held June 10 - June 28, 2013. The annual three-week program will run Monday thru Friday from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. each day at the Sarasota Opera House, 61 N. Pineapple Avenue, Sarasota.

One World Theatre, Austin's premiere music venue known presenting diverse music and cultural arts in an up close and personal setting has announced its 2013 Summer Season. Theatre legend Arthur Laurents, who passed away earlier this year, has a final book that will soon be released by Applause Theatre & Cinema Books. The book, which prviously set for a April 24 release, will now be available starting September 18, 2012.

First reported by Deadline.com was the sad news that legendary director and writer Arthur Laurents has passed away at 93 years old, dying in his sleep. The Los Angeles Times has added a short statement from Jonathan Lomma, Laurents' agent at William Morris Agency who confirmed his death Thursday, saying that 'he died earlier this evening, peacefully in his sleep, at his home in New York City, after a short illness.' Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma! is the first production at the Mead Center and features an all-star cast under the direction of Artistic Director Molly Smith.
