Grupo Corpo

Ímã & Onqotô
Tuesday 13 - Friday 16 September
Tickets: £10 - £38

Founded in 1975, Brazilian contemporary dance company Grupo Corpo and choreographer Rodrigo Pederneiras have attracted high praise from both critics and audiences for reinventing classical ballet as an exuberant and rhythmic dance form.

Onqotô tackles the origins of the universe through the surprising setting of a football match in Rio de Janeiro. A score of Latin-inflected funk by Caetano Veloso and José Miguel Wisnik accompanies the 21 dancers, with lighting by Paulo Pederneiras.

Ímã is inspired by the scientific law of magnetism whereby particles either repel or attract one another. Set to an experimental soundtrack by Brazilian trio +2, the dancers engage in a constant game of union and dispersion, while Freusa Zechmeister's costumes and Paulo Pederneiras' lighting work in harmony to create an explosion of colour on stage.

Ea Sola

Drought and Rain
Monday 19 & Tuesday 20 September
£10 - £32

French-Vietnamese choreographer Ea Sola was born in Vietnam and trained in Paris. She left her homeland at the height of the war and returned in 1990 to conduct five years of research on the traditional music and dance of Vietnam and the lasting effect of the war on its people.

The culmination of this research was 1995's Drought and Rain, a work that celebrates historical and cultural memory and meditates on the cost of conflict and imperialism. Now, 16 years later, Ea Sola has recreated this moving work with a group of elderly women from the north of Vietnam whose singing consoled the soldiers in the front lines, as well as an ensemble of six virtuoso traditional musicians.
