Review: PURLIE VICTORIOUS at KARAMU

by Roy Berko - Oct 2, 2024

What did our critic think of PURLIE VICTORIOUS at KARAMU? Neither Ruby Dee or Ossie Davis ever appeared in a Karamu stage production but both had significant presence and impact in the organization and in the lives of Karamu artists. They often visited for speaking engagements, to instruct master classes, and to support Karamu's mission. The duo met at Karamu.

Langston Hughes, the author of BLACK NATIVITY, now on stage at the Allen Theatre, in a joint production between Karamu, the country’s oldest black producing theater and the Cleveland Play House, the nation’s first resident company, was an American poet, social activist, novelist, playwright, and columnist.

BWW Interview: Director David Saint of WEST SIDE STORY in Tokyo, Japan

by Larisa Amaya-Baron - Nov 8, 2019

'I've had several Japanese people come up to me before and say, 'This is our story.' They were an older married couple, and I thought, 'Oh? This is a New York story, why do you say that?' And they said, 'Because, back in the late 50s early 60s, our villages were feuding, and they wouldn't allow us to marry. BWW Review: HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS Musical Comedy Satirizes the Brotherhood of Backstabbing Men in the 1960s Corporate World

by Shari Barrett - Aug 13, 2018

Climbing the corporate ladder has always been easy for some and difficult for others. This somewhat-dated story, given how the 'Me Too' movement has changed the male-female office environment these days, follows the rise of J. Pierrepont Finch, who uses a little handbook called 'How To Succeed In Business' to climb the corporate ladder from lowly window washer to high-powered executive, tackling such familiar but potent dangers as the company 'Yes' men, backstabbing co-workers who want to succeed by causing you to fail, sexy secretaries looking for love and marriage, high-level executives who use their power to seduce sexy secretaries in private offices and at office parties, office-wide caffeine addiction, and, of course, true love.
