New Line Theatre, 'the bad boy of musical theatre,' announces its 26th season of adult, alternative musical theatre, including the world premiere of a new revised version of the wild, 1969 adult jazz-rock musical CELEBRATION, by the creators of The Fantasticks, running Sept. 29-Oct. 22, 2016; followed by Kander & Ebb's rarely produced gem ZORBA, running March 2-25, 2017; then the regional premiere of the pitch-black 2002 jazz-rock musical THE SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS, based on the famous novel and film, running June 1-24, 2017; and the world premiere of the third installment of New Line's own creation, the new revue OUT ON BROADWAY: THE THIRD COMING, running August 3-19, 2017. All New Line's mainstage shows will be in the company's new home, the Marcelle Theater, the new blackbox theatre in Grand Center, St. Louis' arts district.

"Balanchine and Beyond," the Pennsylvania Ballet's strangely named program that I saw Saturday, June 11, 2016 at the Merriam Theater in Philadelphia, was a very satisfying evening. Of course, beyond can mean anything, so the choice of Trisha Brown, Hans van Manen and Jean-Pierre Frohlich was a very strange, or very apt, combination, depending on how you view and take your ballet. So I decided, if this is what they are presenting, I'll sit down and enjoy myself. And, for the most part, I did.

What: New York City teens from impoverished communities blossom with self confidence and the life skill of cooking as they pursue culinary achievement in Teen Battle Chef (TBC), the national culinary nutrition program from FamilyCook Productions. 'The Sizzle of Pursuit' follows a group of teens training to develop culinary skills and healthy eating habits to battle the chronic diseases and life stresses of growing up in poverty-dense communities. Students from TBC programs at Edward A. Reynolds West Side High School in Harlem and Health Careers High School in Washington Heights formed competition teams with Franklin K Lane students in Brooklyn to compete in Teen Battle Chef Live in 2015. Documentarian Gillian Aldrich, whose credits include working for director Michael Moore, followed the students as they prepped for the completion. Former First Lady of New York, Michelle Paige-Paterson will moderate a short post-film discussion to include special guest Claus Meyer, co-founder of world renowned noma and The Melting Pot Foundation. The event is presented by FamilyCook Productions, and co-sponsored by EmblemHealth and the Metro-Manhattan Chapter of the Links, Inc. Today, producer Mark Goucher has confirmed that following the phenomenal success of the current UK tour, the new production of Hairspray will return at the end of summer 2017 to once again tour the UK. This second tour of the smash hit musical will visit venues across the country until the spring of 2018. Casting, dates and locations for the 2017/18 tour will be announced in due course.

Houston Ballet to Present THE SLEEPING BEAUTY, 2/25-3/6

?From February 25 - March 6, 2016, in celebration of Artistic Director Emeritus Ben Stevenson's 80th birthday, Houston Ballet will revive his spectacular staging of The Sleeping Beauty. The ballet is a flagship work for the company and a piece that is recognized as one of the supreme achievements of classical ballet. The Sleeping Beauty is based on the classic French fairy tale by Charles Perrault: a beautiful princess is cursed by an evil fairy and doomed to sleep for 100 years - only to be awakened by the kiss of the handsome prince who loves her. Desmond Heeley's spectacular designs beautifully evoke the magic, drama and whimsy of this great work. Houston Ballet will give nine performances of The Sleeping Beauty at Wortham Theater Center in downtown Houston.
