Part of the Arts and Ideas series of performances, lectures and conversations, The Friend Center for the Arts at the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco (JCCSF) today announced details of its comprehensive Performing Arts programming for 2010/11. The eclectic array of performances in the intimacy of Kanbar Hall will include a tribute to Stephen Sondheim on the occasion of his 80th birthday by Broadway star Liz Callaway; performances of The Laramie Project by Moisés Kaufman's Tectonic Theater Project; Viva Cuba! With Carlos Reyes; and the Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company. Returning favorites include the Harlem Gospel Choir, the Great Broadway Sing-Along: the comedy of The Capitol Steps; and The Jewish Theatre with a production of Neil Simon's Lost in Yonkers.

The Lucille Lortel Awards announced today the details for the 25th Anniversary Lortel Awards Reception & Ceremony. The Awards Reception will be held on May 2, 2010 at 6 PM EST with the Ceremony beginning at 8 PM EST at Terminal 5, 610 West 56th Street, between 11th & 12th Avenues. Performing some of Graham's classic works, including 'Appalachian Spring,' this internationally acclaimed company, called 'one of the seven wonders of the artistic universe' by the Washington Post, celebrates both the past and future of this distinctly American art form.

In 1951, architect Percival Goodman commissioned three avant-garde artists to create works for his Congregation B'nai Israel synagogue in Millburn, New Jersey. Robert Motherwell, Herbert Ferber, and Adolph Gottlieb - each of whom later became a prominent figure in the Abstract Expressionist movement - created, respectively, an expansive lobby mural, a monumental exterior sculpture, and a large-scale Torah curtain. Congregation B'nai Israel drew national attention as the first congregation to introduce contemporary abstract art and was heralded as an outstanding example of modern religious architecture.

George Street Playhouse begins 2009 with its production of Donald Marguiles' Sight Unseen. When first presented in 1992, the play won the OBIE Award for Best New American Play, was nominated for a Drama Desk, and was a Pulitzer Prize finalist. George Street Playhouse Artistic Director will helm the production, slated to run at the New Brunswick theatre January2020 - February 15, 2009. Matthew Arkin, last seen at GSP in their production of Theresa Rebeck's The Scene, leads an ensemble including Heidi Armbruster, Christopher Curry and Kathleen McNenny.
