Once again, Director and Broadway star Evan Pappas enlisted an energetic ensemble full of grandiose voices and enthusiasm to bring another crowd-pleasing musical to Long Island. This time around it's 'The Full Monty' which first premiered on Broadway in 2000. This Terrence McNally/David Yazbek adaptation of the cult classic motion picture was one of the first movies from the late 90's to be musicalized for the stage and definitely one of the better ones.

If you're smart, you'll grab your tickets for the Fort Wayne Civic Theatre's SWEENEY TODD: THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET while they're still available, because by all rights, they should sell out faster than Mrs. Lovett's meat pies (once she adds their secret ingredient, that is). SWEENEY TODD, the well-loved and appropriately-macabre Sondheim musical about a barber who embarks on a murderous rampage in order to get revenge for the mistreatment of his wife and daughter, has one more weekend in Fort Wayne under the direction of Leslie Beauchamp with music direction by Ben Wedler and assistant direction by Christopher J. Murphy.

Director Julie Kramer and choreographer Jessica Hartman have stayed true to the 1975 vision, but also managed to make it more energetic and faster paced. The dancers often seem to defy gravity and levitate during numbers, and it's all gorgeously staged and executed.

When I was around 15 or 16, there were auditions in my town for The Miracle Worker. I was so excited. My younger brother has special needs, and is non-verbal, so the play meant a lot to me and I really, really wanted to play Annie. I practiced the accent, read the script a bunch, watched the movie, and did everything I could to prepare. (I now realize this should've been a sign that dramaturgy is the path for me).

UC Irvine's drama department has this fun little policy that if you're absent twice, your grade drops a?" of a letter grade and two tardies count as one absence. You're officially tardy the second the clock strikes the hour. For me, the graduate student teaching my acting course takes roll at 7:59am. I'm usually ridiculously early to everything, but even I scoffed at this policy. You're late if you are in the classroom at 8:00am? According to the person who determines my final grade: absolutely.

Eric Michael Gillett seems to describe himself as a sort of enigma who's just come to New York by chance. His latest soul-searching tour returned him once again to that happy place, the stage, where he could share the story of his career using witty retorts and of course, singing (something he's pretty good at).

There are signs that the grandaddy of role-playing games, Dungeons & Dragons, is making a comeback, even among the kind of kids who'd usually be glued to their computer games. But its depiction - and general celebration - in Qui Nguyen's 'She Kills Monsters' currently being revived by Rorschach Theatre at the Atlas Performing Arts Center, only seems to show it fading into the past faster than it did the last time it unfolded on this very stage in 2014.

Directors for MAMMA MIA! at the Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center, Keenon Hooks and Fred Helsel, with Fred Helsel as Producer, Keenon Hooks as Choreographer, and Mazie Rudolph as Musical Director, prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that this musical is just as much fun in a smaller theater thanks to the talented cast who really enjoy every moment they appear onstage, with a lively band that really enjoys performing the ABBA score. The overall enthusiasm displayed by all draw the audience in to the action, especially by the finales when everyone was up on their feet, singing and dancing along.

Many will know the story of Oliver from the classic Charles Dickens novel Oliver Twist. The musical Oliver! by Lionel Bart, first opened in the West End in 1960 and on Broadway in 1962. The show has been revived numerous times and, in 1968, it was adapted for the screen. For the sake of the stage version, the original story by Dickens was dramatically simplified and provides a rather different interpretation of the character of Fagin. The musical is particularly true to Dickens in its emphasis on class differences and prejudices related to class, while presenting the subject matter with a healthy dose of comedy. Oliver! can be seen on stage at Oyster Mill Playhouse from November 8-24. I was given a rare opportunity to have a sneak preview of the show during one of their dress rehearsals, and it is a show that you will want to make time for this month.
