Edith Piaf and Marlene Dietrich were two of the greatest names in international show business during much of the 20th century. At a time when popular culture was still defined by a small handful of artists, these were two of the biggest. Piaf enchanted the world with her singing, her moving life story, and unostentatious appearance; while Dietrich's beauty, elegance, and bewitching stare helped to define the meaning of a Hollywood star. They were both divas without compromise, whose lives were as theatrical as their performances. Yet, these two women, who couldn't be more dissimilar and approached life and art in very different ways, became fast friends and eventually lovers.

Broadway star Chilina Kennedy returns to Stratford for a one night only in-concert performance of Leslie Arden's acclaimed Canadian musical THE HOUSE OF MARTIN GUERRE. Stratford audiences may remember Ms. Kennedy from her much lauded lead performances in WEST SIDE STORY, EVITA, and JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR to name just a few. Since then, she transferred to Broadway with the rest of the company of JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, and then played over a thousand performances on Broadway as the title character in BEAUTIFUL: THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL. Currently, she is starring as Dina in the national tour of THE BAND'S VISIT. BWW had the chance to speak with Ms. Kennedy a few days after she concluded the Toronto run of THE BAND'S VISIT. She shared her excitement to finally return to the Stratford Festival, and her passion for THE HOUSE OF MARTIN GUERRE.

With the term a?oewitch hunta?? being bandied about ad nauseam in our national discourse, it seems an ideal moment to look back upon the actual witch hunt that occurred in Essex County, Massachusetts, at the end of the 17th century. SALTONSTALL'S TRIAL: THE SALEM WITH TRIAL'S UNTOLD STORY, a new play by Michael Cormier and Myriam Cyr at the Larcom Theatre in Beverly, does just that. It is a smart, ambitious production with a commanding performance by Elliot Norton and IRNE Award-winning actor Benjamin Evett in the title role and a 20-member ensemble representing the accused women, town residents, clergy, and officers of the Court.

It was 40 short years ago when the Pasadena Honky-Tonk, Gilley's, was made famous in “Urban Cowboy,” the movie that propelled country music into mainstream media like never before. With the help of the movie, starring John Travolta and Debra Winger, Mickey Gilley and several other acclaimed artists like Charlie Daniels, Bonnie Raitt and Anne Murray were able to light a spark to propel their music careers further than ever before. Gilley, now in his 80's, is still going strong with more than 80 tour dates a year. In honor of the 40th anniversary of “Urban Cowboy,” Gilley continues his partnership with Johnny Lee for the 'Urban Cowboy Reunion Tour.' Since “Urban Cowboy” was released in 1980, country music has managed to remain current and mainstream. After the movie, it became “cool” to wear cowboy boots and pearl snap shirts and listen to country music. This is still true today, walk into any honky tonk on Lower Broadway in Nashville, Tenn. or Austin, Texas and you'll see the reminders of what has become known as the “Urban Cowboy Movement” in country music. The soundtrack for the movie was certified triple-platinum in 2018 and features hits like “Stand By Me,” “Lookin' for Love,” “Devil Went Down to Georgia,” “Lyin' Eyes,” “Could I Have This Dance” and many more. “Urban Cowboy” has had more of an impact on today's society than we realize.
