The Kitchen's Spring 2018 Gala celebrates Nan Goldin and Lydia Lunch, two iconic American artists whose careers were borne of, deeply influenced, and have now engrained in collective memory the underground artistic spirit and political underpinnings of pre-gentrification Downtown New York subcultures (May 16). The evening features performances by New York's own post-punk band Bush Tetras, saxophonist and vocalist James Chance, and Australian singer JG Thirlwell & Ensemble with special guests. LAST LIFE: A Shakespeare Play Makes Premiere in NYC

The Box Collective in collaboration with Piece of Yourself announces the premiere of Last Life: A Shakespeare Play, which will premiere on June 14 in New York City. A movement-based theatrical performance directed by Sara Fay George, the piece is crafted entirely from the plays, songs, and poems of William Shakespeare. A man and woman, trapped in a circle of salt, face the wounds of their past in this dramatic and visceral exploration of the evolution of love. After running home and tossing on my short-suit, I threw myself into the middle of Columbus avenue in a frenzied flail-praying for a lit cab. Today, The Cleveland Orchestra and Music Director Franz Welser-Most have announced that Lisa Wong has been named Director of Choruses for The Cleveland Orchestra, effective immediately. The Cleveland Orchestra Chorus is one of the few professionally trained, all-volunteer choruses sponsored by a major American orchestra. Its members hail from nearly fifty Cleveland-area communities and together contribute more than 15,000 volunteer hours to the Orchestra's music-making each year. Western Medication Announces New Album TASTE + Tour Dates

Nashville-based quartet Western Medication are excited to announce their sophomore full-length Taste, to be released on June 29, 2018. To ring in the announcement, the group has shared their video for first single 'Devils Sing,' which premiered via Nashville Scene. 'It's a self-deprecating riff on tropes that marked music videos from the late '80s and early '90s, with exaggerated camera work and visual effects and paint splattering every which way for no particular reason,' they said of the video. 'It's done in such a way that it shows they know how obvious their influences are, and they can laugh at themselves about it - something useful when you're trying to navigate growing up.' Peak Performances presents M Stabat Mater, a choreographic exploration of motherhood from Inbal Oshman. With a title that encompasses "M," the most common sound in the word for "mother" within languages all over the world, M Stabat Mater probes the joys and sorrows of the experience. Oshman's piece, set to baroque music, explores the vulnerability and tenderness required of mothers, and the strength and ferocity that come with the territory. She borrows from the mythological mothers of history, including the Mary of Christianity, the violent Hindu goddess Kali, and the Four Matriarchs of the Old Testament: Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel, and Leah. New York Baroque Incorporated, one of the ensembles responsible for "the fast-growing vitality of the early music scene in New York" (the New York Times), performs Giovanni Battista Pergolesi's 1736 piece Stabat Mater live on period instruments. ???????The Younes and Soraya Nazarian Center for the Performing Arts (The Soraya) continues its intimate "Jazz Club" performances with jazz trumpeter Amir ElSaffar and his Two Rivers Ensemble on Thursday, April 26 at 8:00pm. ElSaffar was born to an American mother and an Iraqi father. After studying classical music in the U.S. and Iraqi maqam music in Baghdad, he forged his own path by mixing ornaments and microtones from Arab music with melodies and harmonies from the West. His unique fusion has won him accolades from DownBeat magazine and rowdy ovations at the Newport Jazz Festival. (more...)
