Carmen R. Nelson Reflects on Father in the U.S. Army During World War II
by Christina Mancuso - Oct 14, 2013

Carmen R. Nelson-Holt is one of Cleveland's 'Moot' Nelson's seven children. Before his passing in 1994, Cleveland jokingly told her to go ahead and proceed with getting his diary published. The diary was Cleveland's personal assessment of the war but when it was over, it was carefully buried away, along with the past. Cleveland handed Carmen his diary, a spiral bound notebook filled with handwritten pages that were becoming yellow with age and very hard to read. Although it took several years for Carmen and her sisters to translate their dad's notes, its every page was a precious moment in time capturing the life of a dedicated soldier who dearly missed his loved ones yet knew that he had a tremendous duty to uphold.

by Tyler Peterson - Sep 6, 2013

The Metropolitan Opera will open its 2013-14 season on September 23 at 6:30 p.m. with a new production of Tchaikovsky's romantic tragedy Eugene Onegin, directed by Deborah Warner in her Met debut. Valery Gergiev returns to the Met for the first time since 2010 to conduct the performance, which will feature Anna Netrebko-the first soprano in Met history to star in three consecutive opening night performances-in her first company performances as the naive heroine Tatiana, whose infatuation with the title character has tragic repercussions. Mariusz Kwiecien brings his acclaimed interpretation of Onegin to the Met for the first time, opposite Piotr Beczala, who reprises his celebrated portrayal of Lenski. Oksana Volkova sings the role of Tatiana's sister, Olga, and Alexei Tanovitski sings Prince Gremin, the older man who offers Tatiana security. This cast sings eight performances of the opera through October 19, with the October 5 matinee performance transmitted live to more than 1,900 movie theaters in 64 countries around the world as part of The Met: Live in HD series. Due to an unexpected surgical procedure, Warner was unable to travel to the Met to stage Eugene Onegin, which is being directed here by her longtime collaborator Fiona Shaw.

Regional Opera Company of the Week: PORTopera
by Scott Frost - Apr 4, 2013

PORTopera has quite an interesting inception story, dating back to the 1970s when Bruce Hangen, at that time Music Director for the Portland Symphony dreamed of forming an opera company in Maine. In 1985, Hangen accepted the Music Director position for the Omaha Symphony in Nebraska. This did not end his dreams of creating a summer season back in Maine and finally in 1994 the Portland State Theater became available. The time had come for Hangen and a group of friends and supporters created the company, then known as Portland Opera Repertory Theatre. The first production of the company was in July 1995 at the State Theater with Bizet's 'Carmen.' The overwhelming response led to another summer season in '96 with Puccini's 'Madama Butterfly.' In the second season the company also introduced PORTopera's Young Artists Program to help the careers of emerging young singers.

Michigan State University Department of Theatre Presents SWEET MERCY, Beginning 3/19
by Kelsey Denette - Mar 5, 2013

In this world-premiere work, chosen as the winner of Michigan State University's 2012 International Playwriting Competition, playwright Melody Cooper examines the moral responsibility of "First-World" bystanders to international conflicts. It is 2006, and Rachel, a young woman from a military family, is giving up a life of humanitarian work abroad to marry an officer. Carl, a former U.N. Peacekeeping Officer and a friend of Rachel from her days working in Rwanda during the 1994 genocide, unexpectedly turns up before the wedding. The desperate Carl reaches out to Rachel, begging her to remember the village massacre that they both witnessed and urging her to continue aid work in Darfur-causing tensions within Rachel's family to boil over. This haunting story is theatrically told, with flashbacks and visions of Carl's young friend Kigeri woven into the stage action, and sections from Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus serving as chilling parallels to the conflicts in Rwanda and Darfur.
