After years spent working and living with the innumerable stories, histories, anguish, humor, tears and remorse of the residents in their care, Susan Lukin came to see that there is a vast discrepancy between the reality of detention and the views and preconceived notions people have regarding New York City's juvenile justice system. With 'The Child Inside' (published by Trafford Publishing) she offers readers a new and different viewpoint about this segment of American society while conveying her belief that in many cases detention can be a blessing in disguise as, in her own words, 'the longer a youth stays in detention, the better it is for him.'

Admittedly, after experiencing South Coast Repertory's potent and captivating new production of SWEENEY TODD: THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET, I'm hard pressed to remember the last time I was both this deeply moved and this excitedly riveted by Stephen Sondheim's macabre tale of a murderous barber hell-bent on exacting revenge. A curiously odd but strangely engrossing show peppered generously with dark humor, tragically-romanticized notions, and contrasting serious overtones, SWEENEY TODD's latest iteration in Orange County---now on stage in Costa Mesa through February 16, 2019---is a thrilling, quite distinctive new reinvention, that feels like a fresh pop-up play put on by a traveling Vaudevillian troupe that time-travelled from the past to give us modern audiences a live cautionary reenactment of a Penny Dreadful story that may just be too strange not to be true.

Even in traditionally-based music, every band evolves. As the world of Bluegrass continues to widen its tent of what is and isn't accepted as part of the genre, it remains an artform that contains a traditional tenant next to one open to individual expression. With harmony between the two, Bluegrass has remained a perfect medium for songwriting. Chris Jones & The Night Drivers have taken advantage of this creative environment, becoming award-winning veterans at writing, performing and recording, with Jones being one of the foremost songwriters in Bluegrass - so much so, he has helped evolve the genre over the last several years by adding his deeply personal and original style to his music.
