Washington National Opera (WNO) presents the world premiere of An American Soldier, June 13-14, 2014 in the Kennedy Center Terrace Theater. An American Soldier features music by composer Huang Ruo and a libretto by David Henry Hwang. This new work, to be performed in English, is the second hourlong opera created under the auspices of the American Opera Initiative, WNO's commissioning program for contemporary American opera. An American Soldier is directed by David Paul and a chamber orchestra is conducted by Steven Jarvi; both are alumni of WNO's Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Program.

Classic Stage Company has announced that Dave Quay, who appeared in the company's recent production of David Ives' The Heir Apparent, is this year's recipient of the Rosemarie Tichler Fund grant.

Bizet's Carmen overflows with alluring and familiar melodies as it tells the spellbinding story of a beautiful but heartless Spanish gypsy woman who leads a naive young army officer into a tempest of passion and betrayal. This CSO collaboration with Opera Columbus brings to life Carmen's vibrant world with a cast of outstanding singers, the Columbus Symphony Chorus, and Columbus Children's Chorus, all conducted by Jean-Marie.

Fresh off its recent Tchaikovsky production at BAM Fisher, the Ensemble of the Romantic Century (ERC) presents another fully staged theatrical concert interweaving drama and music about one of the most famous trials of the 19th century. Delivered by a top-caliber cast in an intimate setting, The Trial of Oscar Wilde focuses on the tragic shackling, public scrutiny, and subsequent imprisonment of the homosexual playwright/writer Oscar Wilde (1854-1900). A script based on Wilde's correspondence, plays, and short stories (performed by Broadway's Michael Halling as Oscar Wilde and esteemed Robert Ian Mackenzie as Lord Queensbury) provides a dramatic backdrop for chamber music by French and English composers from the late 19th and early 20th centuries including Chausson's masterful Concerto for violin, piano and string quartet, and works by Satie, Elgar, Faure and Franck in performances by the dynamic Amphion String Quartet, violinist Susie Park, pianist Max Barros and a romping barbershop quartet.

Closing Aurora Theatre Company's 22nd season is David Mamet's powerful, fast-paced drama AMERICAN BUFFALO. As part of its fifth anniversary celebration, the Museum of Arts and Design will present Inspired, an exhibition showcasing works that have joined the museum's collection since the opening of its new Columbus Circle building in 2008. Featuring more than 100 works of sculpture, jewelry, ceramics, furniture, and textiles, Inspired will explore how contemporary creators from around the globe are carrying the craft tradition into the 21st century with innovative techniques and practices that incorporate mediums both new and familiar.
