Opera singer, Brian Asawa has died following a long illness on April 18, 2016, at the age of 49.  He was a Japanese-American countertenor. 'In his prime', according to Opera News, 'Asawa was an electric performer, his fearless performing style supported by a voice of arresting beauty and expressivity'. 

Bay Street Theater will welcome THE ABSOLUTE BRIGHTNESS OF LEONARD PELKEY as a Special Mainstage Bonus Production this summer. The one-man play will run one week only from July 18 through July 24.

Julie Taymor could be in the midst of plotting her big Broadway comeback.

Ellie Nunn, the daughter of the legendary Shakespearean director Sir Trevor Nunn and Imogen Stubbs, makes her Shakespeare debut this Tuesday 5th April as Viola in Grassroots Shakespeare London's production of Twelfth Night. Sir Trevor memorably directed Imogen Stubbs as Viola in the 1996 film of 'Twelfth Night'. The play also stars John Pickard as Sir Toby Belch and Tamaryn Payne as Olivia.

Legendary scenic and costume designer, MICHAEL YEARGAN (currently represented on Broadway with Fiddler on the Roof and The King and I), and costume designer SUSAN TSU are among the 2016 TDF/Irene Sharaff Awards recipients. The awards will be presented at a ceremony on Friday, May 20, at 6:30pm, at the Edison Ballroom (240 West 47th Street).  Ms. Tsu was selected to receive the 2016 TDF/Irene Sharaff Lifetime Achievement Award for costume design and Mr. Yeargan will receive the Robert L.B. Tobin Award for Sustained Excellence in Theatrical Design. The awards are presented through Theatre Development Fund's Costume Collection.

Berkeley Repertory Theatre today announced the West Coast premiere of Treasure Island by Tony Award-winning director Mary Zimmerman. Critically praised as "nothing short of sublime" (Chicago-Sun Times), and "Zimmerman remains a superior storyteller " (Chicago Tribune), Treasure Island, a co-production with Chicago's Lookingglass Theatre Company, is a glorious adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's most beloved novel. Sondra Radvanovsky sings the second of the three Queens in Donizetti's 'Tudor trilogy' when she stars as the devout, doomed Mary, Queen of Scots in Maria Stuarda, opening January 29. Maria Stuarda tells the story of the political and personal rivalry between two queens: Mary, Queen of Scots and her cousin and rival, Queen Elizabeth I. Radvanovsky is the first soprano in Met history who will sing the lead roles in all three Donizetti Queen operas in the course of a single New York season, a feat famously accomplished by Beverly Sills at New York City Opera in the 1970s.
