BWW Review: Trevor Noah's First DAILY SHOW Feels Like Jon Stewart's DAILY SHOW; For Now
by Matt Tamanini - Sep 29, 2015

There is a saying in sports that goes, “You never want to be the guy that follows The Guy,” or something to that effect. It means that following on the heels of an icon is a fool's errand. No one remembers that Gene Bartow replaced John Wooden as coach at UCLA, or that Marty Domres took over under-center for Johnny Unitas; both were destined to fail, simply because of the legends that they were unfortunate enough to succeed. Yet, that is the  very situation in which Trevor Noah found himself when he assumed the anchor chair at Comedy Central's World News Headquarters last night as the new host of THE DAILY SHOW.

BWW Feature: Top Three Musical Roles Jake Gyllenhaal Should Play on Broadway- BWW Readers Weigh In!
by Sally Henry - Aug 27, 2015

Though most of us think of Gyllenhaal as the kid from the 1999 film OCTOBER SKY who grew up to receive an Oscar nomination for BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN and has of late sported a rockin' beard, many people may not know that he has also graced both the London and Broadway stages. With these credits under his belt, might a Broadway musical be Gyllenhaal's next venture?

BWW Reviews: 3DT's Eye-Popping TARZAN Musical Swings into the OC Jungle
by Michael L. Quintos - Jul 24, 2015

OC's award-winning regional theater company 3-D Theatricals' latest effort is a remarkably admirable, visually-stunning iteration of Disney's TARZAN® THE MUSICAL that defiantly dazzles and entertains despite the inherent, unavoidable shortcomings of its licensed source material (a problematic book and mostly forgettable score). Thanks to the incredible combined efforts of the show's creative team of brilliant theatrical artisans, its richly striking orchestra, and its top-notch, super-talented ensemble cast (led by Devin Archer and Daebreon Poiema), this ultimately winning local production has certainly earned all its well-deserved cheers. Under the showmanship-style guidance of director Rufus Bonds Jr., 3DT's vividly colorful TARZAN manages to rise (at times literally) high above the original show's weak plotting, Hwang's sometimes stale dialogue, and Collins' run-of-the-mill lyrics... and triumphantly emerge as a wonder-filled, visually-stunning treat for all ages.

BWW Reviews: MTW Stages Colorful West Coast Premiere of BIG FISH, Ends 11/16
by Michael L. Quintos - Nov 13, 2014

Broadway's loss is definitely Long Beach's gain now that the big, bright, and buoyant new musical BIG FISH is making a splash as the season opener for Musical Theatre West's 62nd season. Filled to the brim with heart, emotional heft, and colorful storytelling, this slightly flawed but charmingly imaginative new musical wraps up its final remaining West Coast premiere performances at the Carpenter Center for the Performing Arts in Long Beach through November 16. My immediate recommendation? Definitely experience this while you can.

BWW Flashback Friday: FELICITY Finally!
by Jennifer McHugh - Oct 10, 2014

A year after graduating college, I got sucked into the college journey of Felicity Porter. For four years, I was there for her adventure in New York City, far away from Palo Alto, California as she juggled the love of Ben and Noel and tried to figure out exactly who she was and who she wanted to be. It encapsulated the emotions of going to college, being in college and most importantly, learning to say goodbye to college. Felicity struck all the right chords. Let's journey back!
