The Library of Congress is celebrating Billy Joel's 50-year career and his selection as the 2014 recipient of the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song in the nation's capital with a series of events, culminating in a star-studded concert tonight.

Broadway fans had plenty of reasons to celebrate this year, with dozens of shows having opened since January, hundreds of actors having made their debuts, and many more having returned to the stage for critically acclaimed performances. Not all news was good though, as we also suffered a loss of an incredible amount of talent. Below, BroadwayWorld sends a fond farewell to those who passed away in 2014.

We've been putting that question to members of the Nashville theater famiy for the past month to find out what it is that motivates creative types to pursue an illusory and challenging career, while for others the theater gives them a creative avocation that helps keep them sane. The 2015 Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting today announced its judging panel ahead of this year's official launch on 29 January 2015, which will also mark the Prize's 10th anniversary. The competition, a unique partnership between the Royal Exchange Theatre and property company Bruntwood, will accept entries from 30 January 2015.

Arcadia Performing Arts Foundation presents its second season at the Arcadia Performing Arts Center -- Three Dog Night on Saturday, January 10 at 8 pm; The Four Tops on Saturday, February 21 at 8 pm; Big Bad Voodoo Daddy on Friday, March 27 at 8 pm; The Muppet Movie Sing-a-Long on Saturday, May 16 at 2 pm and Dick Fox Doo Wop Extravaganza on Saturday, June 6 at 7 pm. Back in the late 1990's before vampires sparkled, there was a town called Sunnydale that was home to Buffy. She wasn't just an average teenage girl, she slayed vampires. Spun off from the 1992 movie of the same name, the TV series, BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER ran from 1997 – 2003. A little known fellow by the name of Joss Whedon brought a new kind of heroine to our small screens and vampires were in our lives to stay.

Paloma Herrera, Julie Kent and Xiomara Reyes, Principal Dancers with American Ballet Theatre, have announced their retirements from the Company at the conclusion of the 2015 Metropolitan Opera House season in New York City. “These three unique ballerinas have each made such distinctive contributions to ABT throughout the years,” Artistic Director Kevin McKenzie stated. “With them, an era of our history resides. Their remarkable careers will be three more reasons to celebrate our 75th Anniversary Season.”

The verdict is in: BBC America has a hit on its hands with “Intruders.” The new paranormal sci-fi thriller, based off of the Michael Marshall Smith novel of the same name, wastes no time launching viewers into the action. While many genre shows (and at it's heart, “Intruders” is very much a genre show) overload audiences with difficult to follow plots and science references that fly over the heads of even the most educated viewers, Glen Morgan and his team manage to walk that fine line between over-complicated and painfully bland, creating an intelligently intricate show that encourages viewer participation…and that is also just plain fun to watch.

Casting is announced for Our Town at the Almeida Theatre. Award-winning US actor-director David Cromer will direct and perform in this intimate version of Thornton Wilder's iconic American play. From September 4-14, 2014, Houston Ballet launches its 45th season with the company premiere of John Neumeier's three-act ballet A Midsummer Night's Dream. The ballet is based on Shakespeare's lighthearted play of the same name and follows the hijinks and hilarity that ensues when a well-intentioned plan with a love potion goes awry. Created in 1977, A Midsummer Night's Dream has served as Mr. Neumeier's calling card, being seen as one of his most joyous and popular creations. Houston Ballet is the first American ballet company to perform the famous work and it is the first piece by Mr. Neumeier to enter the Houston Ballet repertoire.

Cartoonist and creator of the creepy and kooky characters that make up THE ADDAMS FAMILY, Charles Addams, probably never envisioned his work gracing the Broadway stage, but then, could anyone have imagined that such a thing would come to pass. After all, the original single panel cartoons only hinted at the oddly dark nature of his characters. The rest was fleshed out by a terrific TV show that ran in the early sixties, and a couple of feature films that came along in the early 1990's. The current production of the Broadway show is now playing The MUNY, and it's a riotously amusing presentation that had me and my son laughing at the onstage antics (book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice), and bouncing along to the catchy score (Andrew Lippa). This is an exceptional show that features a great cast who seem to be having an absolutely splendid time. The Addams Family is must-see entertainment.
