Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts at Brooklyn College kicks off its 2009-2010 World Stages: Dance series on Sunday, October 25 at 2pm with Chicago-based Luna Negra Dance Theater, performing a program of works by Latino choreographers including the New York premiere of Danzón, a new piece created by Luna Negra's former artistic director, Eduardo Vilaro. The company will be joined onstage by special guests Turtle Island Quartet and the legendary Paquito D'Rivera, who will provide live accompaniment for Danzón.

The Brooklyn Youth Chorus Academy (BYCA) board of directors is pleased to announce the appointment of its new Executive Director, Valerie G. Lewis. Ms. Lewis brings extensive and multi-faceted experience in leadership and marketing to BYCA, which provides performance-based music education to a diverse student body of 285 students and which supports the celebrated Brooklyn Youth Chorus (BYC), one of the foremost children's choruses in America.

NY Philharmonic Announces Details Of June 2009 Radio Broadcasts

In June 2009, The New York Philharmonic This Week ? a two-hour, national, weekly radio program of concerts by the New York Philharmonic ? begins with a concert from the Philharmonic?s sixth annual residency in Vail, Colorado, as part of the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival. In this program, from the July 18, 2008 performance, Music Director Designate Alan Gilbert leads the Orchestra in Tchaikovsky?s Piano Concerto No. 1, with Lang Lang as soloist; Beethoven?s Symphony No. 4; and Sibelius?s Finlandia. The following week, after conducting J.S. Bach?s Brandenburg Concerto No. 4, Music Director Lorin Maazel leads the World Premiere of Aaron Jay Kernis?s a Voice, a Messenger (a Co-Commission with the New York Philharmonic and the Big Ten Band Association); Copland?s Clarinet Concerto, with Principal Clarinet Stanley Drucker as soloist; and Ravel?s Boléro. The third June broadcast, conducted by Lorin Maazel, will be Britten?s powerful War Requiem. Lionel Bringuier conducts the chamber orchestra (in his Philharmonic debut), and soprano Nancy Gustafson, tenor Vale Rideout (Philharmonic debut), and baritone Ian Greenlaw will be the soloists with the New York Choral Artists, the Dessoff Symphonic Choir, and the Brooklyn Youth Chorus. In the final June broadcast, Lorin Maazel conducts two of his own compositions, Monaco Fanfares and Farewells, concluding with Sibelius?s Symphony No. 2.

Born to Dance, on Saturday, January 24th at 2:00pm as part of Making Books Sing Day at the Barnes & Noble in Greenwich Village (396 6th Avenue - at 8th Street). Additionally, following the reading, there will be a 'sneak peek' of Making Books Sing's new musical - the World-Premiere family musical JOS? LIM?N: THE MAKING OF AN ARTIST, with star Diego Rodriguez. JOS? LIM?N: THE MAKING OF AN ARTIST has Book & Lyrics by Barbara Zinn Krieger and Music by Charles Greenberg, with performances set for the Lovinger Theatre at Lehman College in The Bronx; Symphony Space in Manhattan; the Goldstein Theatre at Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn; and Stanford Lively Arts in Stanford, CA. Brad Malow directs, with choreography by Eric Jackson Bradley. Based on an unfinished memoir by the famed dancer and choreographer Jose Limon - JOS? LIM?N: THE MAKING OF AN ARTIST tells his story of struggle and survival through a combination of music, dance and theatre. It examines his life from his exodus with his family to the United States at age 5 during the Mexican Civil War, through his struggle to find an artistic outlet and finally to his triumph as one of the greatest male dancers/choreographers of all time.
