Lin-Manuel Miranda’s first Broadway musical tells the story of a vibrant community on the brink of change in New York’s Washington Heights neighborhood. The windows are always open, the breeze carries the rhythm of three generations of music, and the biggest struggles can be deciding which traditions you take, and which ones you leave behind. In the Heights won Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Score, Best Choreography, and Best Orchestrations. Music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda; book by Quiara Alegria Hudes.

Returning to the Kennedy Center following her turn in the pre-Broadway production of Gigi, Vanessa Hudgens, will take on the role of Vanessa, with newcomer Joshua Grosso as Usnavi, Ana Villafane (On Your Feet!) as Nina, local D.C. actor Mateo Ferro as Sonny, Eden Espinosa (Wicked) as Daniela, J. BWW Review: IN THE HEIGHTS Goes Center Stage at Kennedy Center
by Jennifer Perry - Mar 23, 2018

With the juggernaut that is Hamilton playing DC this summer, it was probably a good marketing strategy for the Kennedy Center to use its new Broadway Center Stage series to (re)-introduce local audiences to Lin-Manuel Miranda's first Broadway musical, the Tony Award-winning In the Heights. Avid local theatergoers have likely seen the show before and fairly recently at that. Last season, Olney Theater Center and Round House Theatre co-produced a well-received production and GALA Hispanic Theatre presented the U.S. Spanish language premiere. However, the five-night, sold out run at Kennedy Center offers another look at the show - this time with an Encores-like staging featuring some of Broadway's best talent directed by original cast member Stephanie Klemons.
