The Pearl Theatre Company revives The Rivals, a 1775 comedy of manners by Richard Brinsley Sheridan, directed by The Pearl’s new artistic director Hal Brooks. Carol Schultz reprises the role of Mrs. Malaprop, an elderly woman who prides herself on having advanced language skills, but continuously butchers idioms. It’s a role she also played for The Pearl in 2003.
Poking fun at the upper class’s proclivity for unnecessary melodrama and caprice, The Rivals traces the relationships of several rich lovers in Bath, England. Young heiress Lydia Languish, enthralled by contemporary romantic novels, craves a forbidden affair. Aware of her desires, aristocrat Captain Jack Absolute disguises himself as a penniless low-ranking military officer. When Lydia’s aunt Mrs. Malaprop learns of the scandalous relationship between her wealthy niece and this mysterious man, she enlists the help of her friend, Sir Anthony, to match Lydia with his honorable son – the very same Jack Absolute. In the meantime, two other men vying for Lydia’s affection are entangled in the identity scheme, while another relationship, between Lydia’s friend, Julia, and Jack’s friend, Faulkland, suffers when the latter can’t stop his jealous rages and doubts.
A new entertainment by Michael Wynne, The Star, will mark Liverpool Playhouse's 150th anniversary this Christmas in honour of its origins as a Music Hall venue. Directed by Philip Wilson, the production will feature Michael Starke. At the Everyman Associate Director Nick Bagnall's effervescent take on The Two Gentlemen of Verona sets the action in a colourful and musical 1960s. Desmond Barrit will appear alongside Maggie Steed as Mrs Malaprop in Sheridan's elegant comedy of manners The Rivals at the Playhouse.

ABC announced today a new music series “Greatest Hits.” Each episode will highlight a five-year period celebrating the biggest hits from that time, hosted by Arsenio Hall and Kelsea Ballerini. Michigan native Teri Hansen loves performing in The Sound of Music because the audiences are just as emotionally involved in the show as she is. "When the curtain goes up, there is an audible gasp because of this gorgeous set and beautiful start," she said. "Then we really start to tell this tale; this dangerous and urgent story, yet a love story as well. You can feel the audience right at the beginning of the show and during it they are edging forward on their seats until the end when they are on their feet going right over the mountain with the Von Trapp family."
