Opera San Jose continues its 29th season with Suor Angelica & Gianni Schicchi,
a double-bill of Giacomo Puccini operas with libretti by Giovacchino Forzano. A young nun struggles with despair in an effort to seek redemption in Suor Angelica. In sharp contrast, Gianni Schicchi, a farce based on a single mention in Dante's Inferno, is filled with greed, laughter, and family drama, and includes the beautiful aria "O mio babbino caro." Suor Angelica & Gianni Schicchi will be sung in Italian with English supertitles. Eight performances are scheduled from April 13 through 28 at the California Theatre, 345 South First Street in downtown San Jose. Russia's profound and far-reaching impact on 20th-century culture will be explored at the 2013 annual Bard SummerScape festival, which once again offers an extraordinary summer of music, opera, theater, dance, film, and cabaret, keyed to the theme of the 24th annual Bard Music Festival, Stravinsky and His World. Presented in the striking Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts and other venues on Bard College's bucolic Hudson River campus, the seven-week festival opens on July 6 with the first of two performances of A Rite (2013) by the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company and SITI Company, and closes on August 18 with a party in Bard's beloved Spiegeltent, which returns for the full seven weeks. Complementing the Bard Music Festival's exploration of “Stravinsky and His World,” some of the great Russian-born composer's most captivating compatriots provide key SummerScape highlights. These include the first fully-staged American production of Sergey Taneyev's opera Oresteia; the world premiere of an original stage adaptation of Mikhail Bulgakov's seminal novel The Master and Margarita; and a film festival titled “Between Traditions: Stravinsky's Legacy and Russian Emigré Cinema.” Together, SummerScape's offerings will continue Bard's yearlong tenth-anniversary celebrations for the Frank Gehry-designed Fisher Center, which commence with a month of special performances in April.
The Jewish Museum and the Film Society of Lincoln Center will present the 22nd annual New York Jewish Film Festival at the Film Society's Walter Reade Theater, Jan. 9-24, 2013. Performances take place October 12 through November 4 at International City Theatre in the Long Beach Performing Arts Center, with low-priced previews beginning tonight, October 9.

Broadway chaperone Beatrice Louise Dickman Swarm passed away on February 13 at the age of 92. She died in her home in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania surrounded by family. 'Mrs. Bea,' as she was commonly referred to by theatre colleagues, worked backstage as an educational consultant at MISS SAIGON for many years.
