New Repertory Theatre announces its 2015-2016 SEASON: IDENTITY. Featuring eight productions in three theatre spaces, next season includes five plays in the Charles Mosesian Theater, beginning with Broken Glass, presented in celebration of the centennial of the birth of playwright Arthur Miller; A Number, Caryl Churchill's stark and startling drama; The Snow Queen, a new musical co-written and directed by former New Rep Artistic Director Rick Lombardo; Blackberry Winter, a National New Play Network Rolling World Premiere; and Freud's Last Session, a razor-sharp, witty, and much anticipated Boston Area Premiere. Our third annual Next Rep Black Box Festival will include two companion pieces whose setting is shared, but whose time is separated by 2000 years: Via Dolorosa by David Hare and The Testament of Mary by Colm To?ibi?n. The Festival will also include the Next Rep World Premiere of Baltimore by Kirsten Greenidge, co-presented with Boston Center for American Performance (BCAP).
Karen Carpenter, a producer, director and teacher, a theater-maker for more than 30 years, has been appointed the interim Artistic Director of the William Inge Center for the Arts and the 34th Annual William Inge Theatre Festival. The Inge Festival is the Official Theater Festival of the State of Kansas, hosted on the campus of Independence Community College, which houses the William Inge archives.
Comic books have long been home to oddball protagonists, but none has ever been stranger than this one! 'The Leg' is a new graphic novel starring the disembodied, sentient leg of Mexican President Santa Anna. (Yes, you read that right.)
'The Leg: Or, the Remarkable Return of the Disembodied Limb of Santa Anna' was created by writer Van Jensen (Pinocchio, Vampire Slayer; Green Lantern Corps; and The Flash) and acclaimed artist Jose Pimienta (A Friendly Game). The 180-page, full-color graphic novel takes place in 1938 Mexico, a century after Santa Anna lost his left leg in battle against French invaders. Now, mysteriously, the Leg has returned, and it discovers a new threat against its beloved country. As the Leg ventures across Mexico, it will encounter the strangest elements of Mexican folklore and history, and it will come face to face with its own turbulent legacy. A pastiche of Robert Rodriguez' Mexico trilogy and the surrealist paintings of artists Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, 'The Leg' is an intensely original spin on the Spaghetti Western genre.
'The Leg' will be self-published, using the Kickstarter crowd-sourcing platform to raise funds for printing and distributing the book. The campaign launched May 5, and within three days was already 50 percent funded. If the project reaches a $15,000 stretch goal, a Spanish-language edition of the book will be produced. As plans were being made for its centenary celebrations in 2011, a devastating earthquake and tsunami struck east Japan, challenging the nation with an unprecedented crisis. Producers Jeffrey Richards and John N. Hart Jr., in association with the American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.), have announced that the box office will open on Thursday, August 8th for the 17-week limited engagement of the critically-acclaimed revival of The Glass Menagerie at the Booth Theatre (222 W 45th Street) with performances beginning Thursday, September 5, 2013, and an opening night set for Thursday, September 26th. Stage, television and film star Robert Sean Leonard will star as Henry Higgins in The Old Globe's 100th anniversary production of George Bernard Shaw's masterwork, Pygmalion. The BBC has released a new trailer for this year's DOCTOR WHO Christmas special airing on BBC America on December 25 at 9/8c. The episode, entitled 'The Doctor, The Widow and the Wardrobe' takes place on Christmas Eve, 1938, when Madge Arwell comes to the aid of an injured Spaceman Angel as she cycles home. He promises to repay her kindness - all she has to do is make a wish.
