Hedgerow Theatre launches its 88th season Sept. 22-Oct. 10 with an adaptation of Theodore Dreiser's stunning novel An American Tragedy portraying true events about one of the most infamous murders of the century. Dreiser's masterpiece is being presented in cooperation with The University of Pennsylvania and The Wharton Esherick Museum, as part of a major symposium, THE BIRTH OF THE MODERN, held this fall at the University of Pennsylvania.

The 2011 Center Theatre Group/Mark Taper Forum season was announced today by Center Theatre Group Artistic Director Michael Ritchie. At a press conference yesterday the Oregon Shakespeare Festival provided a comprehensive picture of the scope of new work underway over the next several season supported by grants totaling more than $800,000. OSF recently received a grant of $600,000 from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation over three years (2010-2012) for the decade-long commissioning, production, and public dialogue initiative American Revolutions: the United States History Cycle. The Edgerton Foundation of Los Angeles, California awarded OSF a four-year $200,000 grant to support the commissioning of five new American musicals, putting OSF in the unique position of creating new American musicals with a resident acting company.

The New York Times is reporting that the producers of THE 39 STEPS have begun discussions to move the play to New World Stages (where it could take the place of The Toxic Avenger, which announced this morning that it was closing). No decisions have been made, but Bob Boyett, the lead producer, tells the paper that they hope to follow Avenue Q's successful lead if business arrangements can be made.
Alfred Hitchcock's THE 39 STEPS, Broadway's longest running comedy, plays its 700th performance tomorrow night, Tuesday, November 10, at the Helen Hayes Theatre (240 West 44th Street). At that performance, the production will tie the runs of such legendary plays as The Miracle Worker (1959) and That Championship Season (1972). THE 39 STEPS also recently passed such long-running shows as Purlie (1970), Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1955), The Children's Hour (1934) and August: Osage County (2007).
The opposites attracting plot is probably as old as romantic comedy itself, but even if Rooms: a rock romance follows familiar paths, the Paul Scott Goodman (book/music/lyrics) and Miriam Gordon (book) two-person musical is such a buoyant, funny and upbeat affair that the clichés of the story are conquered by the cleverness and exuberance with which the story is told. Under Scott Schwartz's swift and breezy direction, the 90-minute one-act scoots the audience along on an immensely enjoyable ride.
