Continuing their fifth season in the summer of 2011, The Porters of Hellsgate return to The Whitmore-Lindley Theatre Complex in North Hollywood with William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice. Taking liberty with time and place, The Porters explore race, class, sexuality and wealth for their six-week run of the Bard's ultimately tragic comedy.

Shakespeare in the Park is one of New York City's most beloved summer traditions. New York natives and visitors alike have been enjoying free Shakespeare in Central Park since performances began in 1954. Now 57 years after Joseph Papp first conceived the project, The Public Theater continues to produce Shakespeare in the Park.
With the success of last summer's Shakespeare in the Park productions of The Merchant of Venice and The Winter's Tale, the 2011 Shakespeare in the Park summer season is once again presenting two Shakespeare plays in repertory, giving audiences eight straight weeks of free Shakespeare at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park.

Actors' Equity Association (Equity) announced today that The Public Theater's acclaimed production of THE MERCHANT OF VENICE is the recipient of its Extraordinary Excellence in Diversity on Broadway Award for the 2010-2011 Season. The Award will be presented at a reception at the Equity headquarters in New York City on Tuesday, June 7, 2011. In addition, Equity will receive a Mayoral Proclamation, presented by Commissioner Katherine Oliver, designating June 7th as Diversity on Broadway Day.
