by Richard Sasanow - Jan 9, 2018

With less than a week until the opening of New York's PROTOTYPE 2018, I was Skype-ing with the producers--no, not Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick--but Jecca Barry (of Beth Morrison Projects, BMP) and Kim Whitener (of HERE), who seem pretty calm. (Actually, they're two of four producers, the others being the eponymous Beth Morrison and Kristin Martin of HERE.) What's to be nervous about? After all they only have 8 new-opera/new-theatre productions (plus other events) opening between January 9th and 20th, including a couple of world premieres.

BWW Review: Forward Flux's Double Feature, Pt. 1: LAS MARIPOSAS Y LOS MUERTOS Calls Out Cultural Appropriation in Modern Music
by Amelia Reynolds - Sep 24, 2017

Forward Flux's hosts another double feature, currently performing at West of Lenin. Las Mariposas Y Los Muertos is one big middle finger to Pitchfork and Vampire Weekend. Rolled into a story of three jaded musicians striving for more authenticity in the cultural milieu, here lies a call to arms concerning cultural appropriate and stereotyping in modern music. One band's dance with stardom forces the three to negotiate racial tension, sibling rivalries, and sacrificing authenticity for fame. Directed by Pilar O'Connell, this is a play that manages to have it both ways: critiquing and understanding millennial bands' concerns.

BWW First Person: What A Difference A Transfer Can Make; Looking at the Differences in Shows Between London and New York
by Kerry Breen - Aug 13, 2017

Ever wonder how your favorite show looks on the other side of the Atlantic? Sometimes a show is exactly the same - and sometimes, the changes can make it nearly unrecognizable. It's no secret that productions cross the Atlantic all the time - whether they be iconic blockbusters like PHANTOM OF THE OPERA or more recent popular productions such as BEAUTIFUL and KINKY BOOTS. Sometimes, those shows end up almost exactly the same in their new home, with only the most minute changes; others appear to be entirely new pieces. The casts may change; staging may vary. Sometimes certain turns of phrase are edited or altered to make more sense, geographically or in terms of local slang.

BWW Review: EVITA Thrills Audiences on Nights of a Thousand Stars at Diamond Head Theatre
by Anton Anderssen - Apr 15, 2017

Evita used United Airlines' tactics when it came to getting what she wanted. She had no problem sending thugs with badges to rough up anyone who disobeyed her. Yet, at the same time, she had immeasurable compassion for the poor. Her marriage to dictator Juan Peron is one of the great romances of the 20th century. Whenever I can see EVITA, whether it be in London, Broadway or thousands of miles across the ocean, I make every effort to pay homage to this fascinating woman.
