Laura Benanti Set for Riverside Park Benefit Tonight

Riverside Park Fund is pleased to announce that Broadway star and Tony winner Laura Benanti will perform at this year's benefit gala, celebrating 25 years of conservancy. The gala, entitled Broadway at the Boat Basin, will be held Monday, June 20 at the Boat Basin Café in the historic Rotunda in Riverside Park. Ms. Benanti was just nominated for a Tony for her performance in Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. Ms. Benanti tells Riverside Park Fund, 'I have run, walked, played, lounged and enjoyed every minute of my time in Riverside Park. It is a rare blessing
to have such a beautiful oasis for people from all walks of life. It is my absolute honor to contribute through song to the preservation of this New York treasure.' Ms. Benanti joins an impressive roster of performers who have all contributed their voices to Riverside Park's well-loved gala under the stars, including Kelli O'Hara, who performed to a sold-out crowd last year, and Brian Stokes Mitchell the year prior. Ms. Benanti is featured on the original Broadway cast album of Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, which will arrive in stores May 10th.

KVPAC's Encore Players wrap up final rehearsals this week in time to mount Dan Goggin's musical comedy sensation, Nunsense. Directed by Gregory Magyar, this 1986 Outer Critics' Circle Award Winner for Best Off-Broadway Musical will run two weekends, May 13-15 and 20-22, 2011. All shows begin at 8:00pm, except for Sunday's performances which are matinees and will begin at 2:00pm.

The 1986 Vince Lombardi trophy that Banks and the rest of the 'Big Blue Wrecking Crew' helped to bring home to New York for their victory in Super Bowl XXI will also be on display from February 1 through Super Bowl Sunday on February 6, 2011. Talking at the premiere of LITTLE FOCKERS, Ben Stiller talked to BlackFilm.com about his upcoming return to Broadway. Stiller said 'Yeah, there's a real history with my family and the play ‘The House of Blue Leaves' because my mother was in the original production in 1971 and that's where I met John Guare, the playwright. It was the first job I really got in 1986, playing the son in the play. To come back and play the father, it's come full circle in that way. My relationship with John has been so long, I'm looking forward to it. It's something I never really thought about doing until the idea got presented to me. I'm really a fan of the director David Cromer, and excited to dwell into it. It's an unknown thing, but I'm looking forward to it.'

This show has only been staged one other time in its entire existence, in Australia in 1986, and certainly deserves a wider viewing. It is "Boojum!: Nonsense, Truth and Lewis Carroll," and it is on the boards at the DCA Theater on Randolph Street (now through December 19), a co-production of Chicago Opera Vanguard and Caffeine Theatre.
