A woman on the brink of turning 50 discovers the Red Hat Society and learns the joys of fun and friendship after 50.
I'll admit I was one of the first to roll their eyes in disdain when I heard they made a musical of the Will Ferrell movie "Elf", back in 2010. "Oh Good," I thought, "another overly sweet yet bland movie adaptation designed to get families in the theater and sell merchandise (in this case, elf hats)." And so even more eye rolling occurred when the 5th Avenue Theatre announced they would be putting up a production of it this year. And while the show may be most of those things I mentioned (especially the elf hats) what it isn't is bland. More importantly what the production at the 5th Avenue manages is a super engaging and absolutely adorable evening of elfish fun.

Hats off to The McCallum Theatre - Cowboy Hats that is - for presenting the incredible vocal quartet "Ryders In The Sky" in concert as part of their stellar 25th anniversary season. It is always a treat to go into the theatre with no expectations - I had never before seen "Ryders In The Sky" and, since cowboy music is not my thing, never really expected I would. But what a joyful surprise! It turned out to be one of the most entertaining afternoons I have spent in the theatre in years. For a solid ninety minutes I couldn't get enough of their spot on vocal harmonies or their infectious humor. In fact, to my surprise, I even bought a CD in the lobby on my way out.
A hysterical ride, Noises Off propels us into a world of absolute chaos and out-of-control laughter. In typical farce fashion, this show's quickened pace will leave you exhausted at the end of the night. Noises Off is crowd favorite with its many mix-ups and mayhem. While all fun and games for the audience, the show is an incredibly complex and difficult one to stage!
Today we are thrilled to be talking to a nine-time Tony Award-winning performer/director/choreographer all about his illustrious career onstage and behind the scenes working on classic musicals such as THE BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS, NINE, GRAND HOTEL, THE WILL ROGERS FOLLIES and many more as well as all about his new solo piece premiering at Feinstein's At Loews Regency this weekend - the one and only Tommy Tune. Taking a look back at his near-peerless legacy as the top director of the 1980s and 1990s on Broadway, Tune imparts his candid insights about show business and reflects upon many aspects of the aforementioned hit shows - from their inception and creation to their critical and public reception and their ultimate legacy - as well as shares stories about his time as a performer, both then and now, with the star-studded tales cumulatively involving such legendary luminaries as Gene Kelly, Barbra Streisand, Michael Bennett, Hal Prince, Maury Yeston, Ken Russell, Jane Krakowski, Sutton Foster and many more. Plus, Tune gives us an enticing glimpse of his new Feintein's At The Regency showcase, TAPS, TUNES AND TALL TALES, playing November 18-26, and casts his sights on the future, near and far, and discusses the types of projects he would like to tackle next - including, first up, finding the perfect NYC location for his environmental new theatre piece, 54. All of that, tons of taps, top hats and tails and much, much more!
