Andrew Shecktor, Berwick, PA resident and author and former creative writing instructor, is proud to announce the final release of his first novel 'Centralia PA, Devils Fire,' published by and available at Amazon.com.
Visit the website at www.centraliapadevilsfire.com.
It all began with a preacher scorned, beat down by a band of brutal, ruthless Mollie Maguires in 1869. The town - Centralia, PA. Just the previous year the town founder, Alexander Rae, was brutally murdered by the same gang. With nothing but time on his hands while recovering from his injuries, he conjured a scheme to exact revenge, and placed a curse on the town that one day none shall remain but the St. Ignatius Roman Catholic Church.
Inspired by previous visits to the town and ultimately by a trip to the now deserted town, bought out by the state following an unstoppable mine fire that began in 1962, the author decided to write a fitting eulogy to the town. The novel is a fictional accounting based on fact and metaphorically presents the mine owners and industrialists as Satanical manifestations in need of exorcism.
A cross between the style of 'The Wizard of Oz' and 'Alice in Wonderland' the short novel is fun to read and also educational.
General historical facts have been added to set the tone for each chapter, and great attention has been given to historical accuracy of things such as weather conditions, dates, astronomical data and historical figures.
The author comments, 'In then end it will leave you wondering if there was indeed a conspiracy by the mine companies to take over the town by eminent domain.'
Today, only a few residents remain, having won an uphill legal battle to remain in the town. The town zip code has been retired, and when the remaining residents move or die, the town will be turned over to the state.
And then... there is the old man with the pipe... but you will have to read the book to learn more about him.
Like the role she will be playing in a new production of 'Ruthless!,' the cult-hit musical, Sophia Anne Caruso is a young actress who will do anything to get the part. The triple threat tween will follow in the tap shoes of Laura Bell Bundy('Hairspray,' 'Legally Blonde') Britney Spears and Natalie Portman. Before they became stars, all three young actors were cast as the diabolically talented Tina Denmark. Of Caruso, Author/Director, Joel Paley says, 'We didn't find her, she found us!' Sophia tracked down the creators while they were trying out rewrites for a new Connecticut production, writing to tell them that after having been cast as Tina in regional theatre, one of the principle actors suffered a fatal heart attack during the dress rehearsal. The show never opened. Although heartbroken and terribly shaken ('It was the worst thing that ever happened in my life') she assured us she knew the role backwards and forwards and was more determined than ever to play Tina. 'We had to meet her. She was Tina Denmark.' An audition was arranged and the rest is going to be history!
Louis Viljoen's ruthless new play THE KINGMAKERS is to be staged at the Alexander Upstairs theatre. The dark political comedy will make its debut in one of Cape Town's best independent theatre spaces, The Alexander Upstairs, and will run 25th August to 13th September, 2014.
Barking Rain Press, a non-profit fiction publisher, announced the paperback and eBook release of 'The Scarred Letter,' a YA reboot of Nathaniel Hawthorne's classic American novel 'The Scarlett Letter.' Written by veteran high school English teacher Val Muller of Northern Virginia, 'The Scarred Letter' is set in a contemporary high school, which becomes the perfect substitute for Hawthorne's Puritan society. Surrounded by ruthless cliques and wannabe outsiders, protagonist Heather Primm finds out just how hard standing up for yourself and your beliefs can be.
Heather Primm never anticipated that a single blog post could ruin her life. Her scoop about steroid use by key players on the school football team sets off an investigation that strips the Orchard Valley Thunderbolts of their state title-and earns Heather a coveted journalism prize. Hated by those involved in the scandal, despised by jealous members of the newspaper staff, ignored by her newly-popular ex-boyfriend, and even berated by her mother, Heather is attacked and a chilling 'T' is carved into her face. Now stigmatized as a traitor, she becomes the object of scorn for nearly all of Orchard Valley High. But when the school offers to send her to a private academy to hush up the matter, Heather is forced to make a decision. Should she refuse to allow fear to control her life by holding to the truth, or accept the chance to escape and build a new life?
To assist teachers in using the book in the classroom, a free Teacher's Guide download is available at the author and publisher websites.
