Barbican Centre
(Barbican/Moorgate) Silk Street London

The Royal Shakespeare Company returns to the Barbican this autumn with a contemporary London Season comprising three of the playwright’s most loved titles: Macbeth, Romeo & Juliet and The Merry Wives of Windsor.

RSC Deputy Artistic Director Erica Whyman follows her incredible 2016 production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream: A Play for the Nation with the violent and devastating tragedy Romeo and Juliet. As in 2016, this production will see young people from RSC Associate Schools perform alongside the professional actors in the cast.

What if your first true love was someone you’d been told to hate?

Set in a world very like our own, this Romeo and Juliet is about a generation of young people born into violence and ripped apart by the bitter divisions of their parents. The most famous story of love at first sight explodes with intense passion and an irresistible desire for change, but leads all too quickly to heart-breaking consequences.

RSC Deputy Artistic Director Erica Whyman returns to the Barbican following her acclaimed production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream: A Play for the Nation (2016) with Bally Gill and Karen Fishwick as the star crossed lovers in this violent and devastating tragedy.

BWW Review: A Valentine for Romeo And Juliet From New York City Ballet
by Marsha Volgyi - Feb 19, 2018

On the evening of Tuesday, February 13, 2018 at the David H. Koch Theater, New York City Ballet featured Romeo and Juliet - a ballet in two acts. It was based on the play by William Shakespeare, music by Sergei Prokofiev, and choreography by Peter Martins.  The scenery was created by Per Kirkeby and the costumes were by Per Kirkeby and Kirsten Lund Nielsen.  The orchestra was conducted by Andrew Litton. The curtain opened to reveal blood red trees and background. This visual was brilliantly conceived by Mr. Kirkeby. It foreshadowed the "flames of lost love and passion". It's opening musical strains evoked a myriad of ominous events yet to occur in the lives of these two star-crossed young people and their families.

BWW Review: SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE Stage Adaptation Romances at South Coast Repertory
by Michael Quintos - Feb 1, 2018

Witty, enchanting, and joyously self-referential, the original film version of SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE fantasizes a story involving a young, virile William Shakespeare in his prime, who quells a bout of writer's block by secretly romancing an engaged lady named Viola---which apparently becomes the inspiration for the Bard's infamous star-crossed tragedy 'Romeo and Juliet.' The plot of the film remains fairly intact in Lee Hall's mostly delightful if slightly diluted stage adaptation, now continuing performances in a gorgeous-looking new regional production at Orange County's Tony Award-winning theater South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa through February 10, 2018. This spunky love letter to the theater is chockfull of stagecraft-insider amusements and fun-to-find Shakespearean Easter Eggs that both aficionados and casual fans will appreciate. But, shockingly, despite the spectacular production values and the beguiling, gusto-bathed performances of its large ensemble cast, this stage adaptation somehow loses some of the inescapable romanticism that is so much more prevalent in the original film.
