PIPPIN's Matthew James Thomas Up for Lead Role in STAR WARS: EPISODE VII?

According to Variety, Thomas is currently on J.J. Abrams' short list for the lead role in Disney and LucasFilm's STAR WARS: EPISODE VII. Though details on the role are scarce, insiders have confirmed that he's a young Jedi apprentice, who will challenge GIRLS star Adam Driver in the film, who recently signed on to play the villain in the next installment of the franchise.

Producers Howard & Janet Kagan (Pippin, The Gershwins' Porgy & Bess) just announced that a new Broadway revival of ON THE TOWN - the musical-comedy love letter to New York City - will open in October 2014 at the Lyric Theatre. This year marks the 70thanniversary of the opening of this iconic musical comedy created by the legendary creative team of Leonard Bernstein, Betty Comden, Adolph Green, and Jerome Robbins. The Lyric Theatre will be reopened after a renovation being completed by its new owners, Ambassador Theatre Group. This historic theater at the crossroads of 42nd Street and Times Square was created from a combination of the original Apollo Theater, and the original Lyric Theatre that stood on the site, and the facade of which still stands on 42nd and 43rd Streets.
Cirque du Soleil's AMALUNA Extends New York Engagement Through 5/18

With only one more week until the iconic Blue and Yellow Big Top is raised adjacent to Citi Field in Queens, Cirque du Soleil has just announced that Amaluna, written and directed by 2013 Tony Award winner Diane Paulus (Pippin, The Gershwin's Porgy and Bess, Hair) will extend its New York engagement through Sunday, May 18. Performances begin Thursday, March 20; with an official premiere Thursday, March 27.

Acclaimed actor and director Mark Ruffalo will share his reflections on for stage and film to students and faculty as The New School for Drama's 2014 Artist-in-Residence. As Artist-in-Residence, Ruffalo will join a master class for The New School for Drama's community of graduate students of acting. He will also speak with undergraduate and graduate acting, directing and playwriting students and faculty in an open forum on Tuesday, March 11 at 7:00 p.m. in Arnhold Hall, 55 W. 13th Street, 5th floor, moderated by Pippin Parker, director of The New School for Drama.

The producers of the Tony Award winning PIPPIN just announced that Kyle Dean Massey (Next to Normal, Wicked) and Ciara Renee (Big Fish) will assume the roles of "Pippin" and "Leading Player" (respectively) in the production beginning Tuesday, April 1, 2014. Matthew James Thomas and Tony Award winner Patina Miller will play their final performance on Sunday, March 30, 2014. PIPPIN is now playing at the Music Box Theatre (239 West 45th Street).

In a sure sign spring is near, The Bushnell announced today its 2014-2015 Broadway Series season. Beginning in September 2014, The Bushnell will bring seven popular Broadway titles to Hartford as part of the Series, along with an additional off-Series blockbuster to round out a strong season lineup. Series titles are Broadway classics EVITA, JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT, and CAMELOT, last year's Tony-winning Best Musical Revival, PIPPIN, Gershwin tuner NICE WORK IF YOU CAN GET IT, and back-to-back Tony Award-winning Best Musicals ONCE and KINKY BOOTS. The phenomenal crowd-pleaser WICKED was also announced to return to Hartford for three weeks in November as a special off-subscription offering.
