TWO SISTERS AND A PIANO Opens September 14 at Theater Schmeater

Set in 1991, during the Pan American Games in Havana and while the Russians are pulling out of Cuba, Two Sisters And A Piano portrays two sisters, Maria Celia, a novelist, and Sofia, a pianist, serving time under house arrest. Passion infiltrates politics when a lieutenant assigned to their case becomes infatuated with Maria Celia, whose literature he has been reading. Seattle Favorite, Jose Amador, returns to the Schmee stage to helm this mutli-facted drama set in the heat of 1991 Cuba.

"My goal is to provide audiences with a many-layered performance, one that honors the tradition in Latinx storytelling to be many things at the same time. An issue with many theatrical productions of texts from Latinx and Spanish origin, from promotions through all other aspects, is that they only focus on one aspect of a given story. This simplification ignores the moments that show humor, familial bonding, love through adversity and how desire is affected by restrictive governments that exist within the play. Audiences are told and prepared to expect one kind of story (turning off those that do not like those sorts of stories) and instead get all these other unexpected facets. José Amador is a local playwright/director/actor who has been actively involved in the Seattle Theater scene for the last two decades. His work as a director has been recognized by the Seattle Times' Footlight Awards (DUELS (2016), BLACK LIKE US (2014) Outstanding Productions) and TPS' Gregory Awards (BLACK LIKE US, Best New Play).
Nilo Cruz is a young Cuban-American playwright whose work has been produced widely around the United States. Cruz has been the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships, including two NEA/TCG National Theatre Artist Residency grants, a Rockefeller Foundation grant, San Francisco's W. Alton Jones award and a Kennedy Center Fund for New American Plays award.
