Seattle Theatre Group to Present DJ Spooky's REBIRTH OF A NATION, 2/23

By: Feb. 19, 2014

Seattle Theatre Group presents DJ Spooky's Rebirth of a Nation at The Moore Theatre, Sunday, February 23, 2014 at 7:00pm.

Come experience Paul D. Miller's (a.k.a. DJ Spooky) "remix" of D.W. Griffith's most significant (and racist) contribution to film history, 1915 Civil War epic "Birth of a Nation".

Miller's "Rebirth of a Nation" reworks the original silent film to expose and criticize its controversial commentary on the events surrounding the Civil War. President Woodrow Wilson famously said of the original film that it was "like writing history with lightning." Miller strikes the film with his own lightning, digitally manipulating its footage to bring to light the horrifying sociopolitical conflicts of America's history and relating them to the conflicts being experienced in early 21st-century America, almost 100 years later. "Rebirth of a Nation" features a dark original score, written by the director and performed by Kronos Quartet. The score contains elements of hip-hop beats and ambient noise and incorporates classical instrumentation.

Seattle Theatre Group's mission is to make diverse performing arts and education an integral part of our region's cultural identity while keeping three historic venues, The Paramount, Moore and Neptune, alive and vibrant. STG presents a range of performances from Broadway, off-Broadway, dance and jazz, to comedy, concerts of all genres, speakers and family shows - at these three iconic theatres in Seattle and venues throughout the Puget Sound region and in Portland, Oregon.
