Seattle Repertory Theatre ends its run during the 25th anniversary of August Wilson's beloved story of baseball and family, Fences. The play is being staged in a number of notable productions across the country, including on Broadway this month. Seattle Rep's production will end its run April 18, 2010.

Set in 1957, Fences is the story of Troy Maxson, a garbage collector who abandoned his dreams of a baseball career. As black athletes finally begin to be accepted into the major leagues, Troy's son wants to pursue his own ambitions of becoming a professional athlete-but his father has other ideas.

The play won Wilson both a Pulitzer and a Tony, and shows the playwright at his best: challenging the American dream through a poetic, powerful, and deeply personal story.

The cast includes James A. Williams as Troy Maxson, William Hall Jr. as Jim Bono, José A. Rufino as Lyons, Craig Alan Edwards as Gabriel, Kim Staunton as Rose, Stephen Tyrone Williams as Cory, and Shiann Rush as Raynell. Esmé DeCoste will understudy the part of Raynell.

Seattle Repertory Theatre is located at Seattle Center at the corner of Second Ave. and Mercer St., Seattle, Washington.

Seattle Rep had a long relationship with Wilson, who lived in Seattle for 15 years and passed away here in 2005 from cancer. Seattle Rep is the only theatre in the world to have produced all of Wilson's work: every play in his 10-play Pittsburgh Cycle, as well as his one-man show How I Learned What I Learned.

This production is a co-promotion with Syracuse Stage. Director Timothy Bond (former artistic director of the Seattle Group Theatre) is now Producing Artistic Director for Syracuse Stage. He will take the Seattle production to Syracuse after its run here.

One of the largest and most renowned regional theatres in the country, Seattle Repertory Theatre produces a mix of classic comedies, recent Broadway hits and cutting-edge new dramas in two theatre spaces.

Since our founding in 1963, actors like Lawrence Fishburne, Lily Tomlin, Samuel L. Jackson, Meryl Streep, Richard Gere, Richard Chamberlain, Jessica Tandy, Christopher Walken and many more have all "walked the boards" at the Rep.

We've premiered plays by August Wilson, Neil Simon, John Patrick Shanley, Wendy Wasserstein, Sarah Ruhl and many others, and some of the world's top directors, designers and artisans have brought our shows to life.

And since we're sharing, we also won the 1990 Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre. And we're proud to say that's oNe You can only win once.
