Seattle Playwrights Salon presents On Cabin Creek by Margaret O'Donnell on Friday May 12 at 7 p.m. at the Conservatory, 5813 Airport Way South with The Speakeasy Players at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free!

Beer, wine, cider, and food available for purchase before and after the show, and during intermission. The Speakeasy Players, a bluegrass ensemble, will play before the performance and during intermission.

How deep are the divisions between the working class and elites in Appalachia? Between men and women? Between blacks and whites? When her husband loses his job, Sophie Lowe is exiled from her beloved home in Tennessee and condemned to purgatory in a company coal town in West Virginia. It is 1939, the waning years of the Great Depression. Samuel Lowe digs for coal in the worst years on record for mining deaths while Sophie strives to keep the family fed, safe, and clothed, and their three nearly-grown children scheme to escape. Sophie's dreams of home collide with those of her family, the demands of her religion, and the motives of the mine owners, as her own secrets and theirs unearth fissures no one seems to be able to bridge.

This play delves into darker themes and is intended for mature audiences.

On Cabin Creek stars James Riley, Kelly Ufford, Laurel Clark, Benjamin Ludiker, Scot Bastian, Kate Danley, Dan Niven, Janet Hietter, and James Lyle, with stage directions read by Steffani Powell.

The Speakeasy Players are a Seattle bluegrass jam group that formed in 2016 after attending a class together in bluegrass at Seattle's Dusty Strings. They've performed as a jam group regularly since then. Members are: Al Troupe, Jim Hutchinson, Larry Benitez, Karen Newell, Michael Kipling, Bonnie Stern Wasser, and Nan Butler

The Conservatory is a Seattle art space and coffeehouse, community meeting place, and artists' workshop in Seattle's Georgetown neighborhood, a growing and glowing arts haven in Seattle near I-5, just north of Boeing Field. The Seattle Playwrights Salon produces new play readings and full productions on the second Friday of every month at The Conservatory to give local playwrights a public place to present new work in development to a live audience.
