Esteemed origami artist Robert J. Lang plans a visit to the Washington Pavilion on Friday, August 4 in conjunction with Free First Friday events. Lang is one of the origami artists featured in the exhibition Above the Fold: New Expressions in Origami, currently showing in the Visual Arts Center's Everist Gallery.

During his visit to Sioux Falls, Lang will be participating in a meet and greet with the public as well as a talk about the exciting intersections of origami and math.

The public meet and greet event with Lang will be held from 5-6 p.m. in the Visual Arts Center's Everist Gallery.

The free Lang talk, held from 7-8 p.m. in the Belbas Theater, is titled "From Flapping Birds to Space Telescopes: The Art and Science of Origami with Robert Lang" and highlights the intersections of origami and math. Lang will describe how geometric concepts enable origami designs of mind-blowing complexity and realism. Lang, a physicist who has worked at NASA/Jet Propulsion Laboratory, is recognized as one of the pioneers in computational origami and the development of formal design algorithms for folding. With a Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Caltech, he has authored or co-authored over 100 papers and 50 patents in lasers and optoelectronics.

Tickets are free for the Lang talk but seating is reserved; patrons are encouraged to get tickets in advance at the Pavilion Box Office at 301 S Main Ave, by phone at (605) 367-6000 or at www.washingtonpavilion.org.

The evening will also include a free gallery talk by local artist Anna Youngers in celebration of her new exhibition In Search of Beauty: Meditations on Classical Themes, opening at the Visual Arts Center on August 5. Youngers grew up in Sioux Falls and graduated from Roosevelt High School. She was trained in classical painting from age 16-20 and set up her studio in downtown Sioux Falls in 2006. Her talk will be held at 6 p.m. in the Visual Arts Center's Shultz Gallery.

This project is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts. https://www.arts.gov
