DIRTY DANCER to Make World Premiere at Edinburgh Festival Fringe
Melissa Firlit's one-woman parody of DIRTY DANCING plays Underbelly Cowgate, directed by Michael Thomas Walker.
Resolve Productions will present the world premiere of Dirty Dancer, a coming-of-age one-woman affectionate parody of the 1980s classic romantic dance movie. Performances will run at Underbelly Cowgate, Belly Laugh, 5 – 30 Aug 2026.
The legacy of Dirty Dancing, the iconic 1987 film, and its place in our collective nostalgia is explored through creator and performer Melissa Firlit's own childhood escapism and sexual awakening. Dirty Dancer transports audiences to the summer of 1963 at Kellerman's Resort, where Firlit plays every character from the film, blending audience interaction, physical storytelling, and the classic soundtrack to recreate every unforgettable moment, including “that” big lift. By unpacking the film's controversial themes and its unwavering championing of the underdog, the show seeks to reignite the cult classic's sense of dangerous excitement, inviting audiences to dream a little, dance a lot, and have the time of their lives.
Writer and performer Melissa Firlit said, "This show is an invitation to play, to dance, to dream, and to tap into that intoxicating, slightly dangerous energy where anything feels possible, where you might believe Patrick Swayze could lift you out of your life. This story celebrates risk, desire, and choosing your own coming-of-age. I'm bringing it to the Fringe as a love letter, not to define the story, but to spark people's own memories of that time, reignite their personal connection to the film, and remind them why we all fell in love with it in the first place."
