SBCC Theatre Arts Department Presents TARTUFFE 3/2-19

By:

SBCC Theatre Arts Department will present Moliere's comedy, TARTUFFE, in a new adaptation by Constance Congdon as the spring Student Showcase production in the Interim Theatre on SBCC's West Campus. Directed by R. Michael Gros, performances will be March 2-19, 2011.

In the comedy Tartuffe, Moliere presents the world with a mirror held up to reveal, in humorous form, the dangers to society represented by hypocrites, and in particular those with false religious piety. Preying on the wealthy Orgon and his family, Tartuffe uses charm and false religious piety to worm his way into every aspect of the domestic life of the household. With biting satire, witty dialogue and an eye for the absurd, Moliere successfully reveals the foibles of people so blinded by what they want to hear, see, and believe, that they do very foolish things to avoid admitting the truth set before their very eyes. Tartuffe is a modern story of religious piety and hypocrisy in which praying and preying mean the same thing.

"Constance Congdon slips into Moliere's tricky shoes and the fit is Cinderella-perfect. Congdon's quicksilver wit and breathless urgency coax the dark heart of Tartuffe into glowing with a twenty-first-century heat." John Guare
