Youth Speaks Hosts Annual Unified District Poetry Slam Finals Today

By:

Youth Speaks, one of the country's leading nonprofit arts organizations presents The Annual Unified District Poetry Slam Finals in Oakland, CA at the James Moore Theatre at the Oakland Museum of California today, February 21, 2014.

Building off of the success of the Youth Speaks Teen Poetry Slam, the Unified District Poetry Slam engages over twenty five high schools from throughout the San Francisco Bay Area to cultivate poetry slam clubs and participate in a region-wide team poetry slam. Each participating high school will have a team of four to six students who will perform original works of poetry using their own vernacular. This event challenges participants to become leaders in their schools and communities by creating opportunities for students to share their narratives and address relevant issues with one another. The Unified District Poetry Slamfosters a spirit that celebrates the idea of community over the individual. This event launches Youth Speaks' slam season, which culminates this year in our Brave New Voices international Youth Poetry Slam in July.

Participating high schools include: Gateway, Balboa, Mission, Downtown, City Arts and Tech, Lowell, MetWest, Oakland Tech, Oakland School for the Arts, Newark Memorial, Mt. Eden, Berkeley, San Leandro, and Oceana. The top six teams make it to the Unified District Poetry Slam Finals stage to competing for the 2014 Unified District Poetry Slam Championship.
