Santa Cruz City Council to Vote on Santa Cruz Shakespeare's New Home

By:
At the Santa Cruz City Council meeting on February 9, 2016 the Council will vote on the proposed use of a site in Upper DeLaveaga Park as the new performance venue for Santa Cruz Shakespeare. Santa Cruz Shakespeare is encouraging members of the community to attend the meeting as a sign of support for the move.
"We are excited by the prospect of moving more fully into the heart of our wonderful community," said Mike Ryan, Artistic Director. "Not only will this move provide a more central location and reduce overall traffic to and from the festival compared to our previous location, but the site has the kind of beauty and seclusion that heighten the enjoyment of these thrilling plays."
At a public hearing held at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium in January, the Santa Cruz Planning Commission recommended to City Council to approve Santa Cruz Shakespeare's proposal for the new theater. If approved by City Council, Santa Cruz Shakespeare will have an agreement with the Santa Cruz Parks and Recreation Department for a 2-year lease on a site in the park located on Upper DeLaveaga Park Road near the Santa Cruz County Regional 911 Center and the former Cabrillo Stroke Center.
"Please show up in person on February 9 at 7pm at the City Council chambers and make your voices known," Ryan said in a recent video blog. "It is the final push where the most critical decision will be made. The more of you who are there to support us, the easier that decision will be to make for City Council."
Ryan's video blog and details about potential new venue can be found at santacruzshakespeare.org and on the company's Facebook page.
The city council meeting will be held at City Council Chambers, 809 Center Street, Room 10, Santa Cruz, CA 95060.
