San Jose Stage Company brings the Regional Premiere of The Night Alive, an imaginative tale of hope and redemption - by three-time Tony® nominee Conor McPherson. With inimitable warmth, humor and heart, the 2013-14 New York Critics Circle Award-Winner for "Best Play" deftly mines humanity in the most unlikely of situations.

EXTRAORDINARY TALE OF HOPE AND REDEMPTION

This modern-day Nativity play brings a darkly comedic glimpse into the anguished lives of a few lost souls searching for divinity. Tommy's not a bad man, he just owes more than he earns. He's just getting by renting a run-down room in his Uncle Maurice's ramshackle Dublin house rolling from one get-rich-quick scheme to the other with his friend Doc. Doing his best to avoid thoughts of his estranged wife and kids. But when he rescues Aimee, who's not had it easy herself, escape from squalor seems possible. Though letting go of their past won't be easy. But together there's a glimmer of hope they could make something more of their lives. Something extraordinary, perhaps.

The Stage is proud to present this Regional Premiere celebrating one of Dublin's leading contemporary voices, the first of two in their 34th Season. Later this season an international co-commission with the Dublin City Arts Office will bring you the World Premiere of Donal O'Kelley's THE MEMORY STICK.

About the Playwright:

Conor McPherson, an Irish playwright, was named by the New York Times as 'the finest playwright of his generation'. Often compared to Samuel Beckett, his plays are known for their gritty, brutal & unyielding tales of immortality. Winner of the 1999 Olivier Award for Best New Play (The Weir), his catalogue of works, including Shining City & The Seafarer, have gone on to multiple Tony, Olivier & Drama Desk nominations. With The Night Alive winning him the 2013-14 New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play.

From the Director:

"It (THE NIGHT ALIVE) has a deadpan humor that's laugh-out-loud funny, and then breaks your heart a few times. It's not afraid to mix menace and charm, and right when you think it might be sentimental, the play punches you in the mouth.

That's where THE NIGHT ALIVE lives - in its surprises, and its graceful turns from one kind of moment to another. In that way, it's very musical, not in a what-a-lovely-lilt-in-your-voice kind of way, but in a how-did-you-make-me-feel-that kind of way. Music transforms lives in the play, briefly but unmistakably, just like in life, and those kinds of moments on stage, and in life, give us hope for the rest of our time on earth that more moments like that will happen again.

The playwright works hard and brilliantly for these kinds of moments, and he's described the feeling of those moments like this:

"What a bizarre experience it is to know that we are alive. And wonder if there is a God, and will something save us." The play ends with exactly that kind of beautiful, unanswered question."
