Ray of Light Theatre (www.rayoflighttheatre.com), San Francisco's inimitable non-profit musical theatre company, is pleased to present Stephen Sondheim's award-winning musical thriller Sweeney Todd to San Francisco. Haunting, sinister and darkly funny, Sweeney Todd is armed to give you the creeps in a way most musicals can't. You'll learn about this sordid character, watch as his sanity crumbles and sit agape as he begins a closely-shaved killing spree that leaves the residents of Fleet Street both terrified and well-fed. Featuring a talented cast of local performers and a live, on-stage orchestra.

Winner of 8 Tony statues and 9 Drama Desk awards, Sweeney Todd is set in 19th Century England. It tells the carefully-crafted story of Benjamin Barker (alias Sweeney Todd), who returns to London after 15 years banishment on false charges. When he discovers that his wife poisoned herself after being raped by the judge who sentenced him, he vows revenge on the judge and later, the whole world. He teams up with a pie maker, Mrs. Lovett, and opens a barbershop in which he slits the throats of customers that she then bakes into meat pies. There will be blood!

Ray of Light knows how to mount a blockbuster production, and Sweeney Todd will surely be one of the must-see shows of the year. Past triumphs include the wildly successful and critically recognized productions of The Full Monty (2012), Assassins in 2011 (winner of 8 BATCC Awards), Jerry Springer the Opera in 2010 (nominated for 9 BATCC Awards), BABY: A Musical in 2010 (winner of 6 BATCC Awards), The Who's Tommy in 2009 (winner of 6 BATCC Awards), The Rocky Horror Show in 2008 (nominated for 5 BATCC Awards) as well as Bat Boy: The Musical in 2005 and 2006 (named a Top 10 show of the year by The SF Bay Guardian).
