NCTC Presents Hilarious And Heartfelt Comedy, STEVE By Mark Gerrard

In March, New Conservatory Theatre Center presents Steve, written by Mark Gerrard and directed by local favorite, Becca Wolff. Named one of Ben Brantley's Top Ten in 2015 in The New York Times, this uproariously funny comedy is "the ultimate theatre-geek's tragicomedy" (Newsday). What happens when you get bored with "happily ever after"? Steve got his happy ending, but years later, his Prince Charming is sexting another man, his best friend is ill, and he's hitting the expiration date on his desirability. Chock full of acidic wit, musical theatre references, and plenty of heart, Steve is a hilarious and relatable comedy about growing up, without growing old.

Playwright Mark Gerrard's work has been developed by MCC, New York Stage and Film and New Group/New Works. His next play has been commissioned by The New Group through the Blanche and Irving Laurie Foundation Theatre Visions Fund. A one-time actor, his acting credits include: Law and Order, The Big C, and The Comeback (HBO). Originally from Oak Park, Illinois, he earned a B.A. in Classics from the University of Chicago and an MFA in Dramatic Writing Program from NYU/Tisch, where he won the John Golden Playwriting Award.

Director Becca Wolff is a California-based director and co-founder of Tilted Field Productions. She explores the intersection of the theatrical and the confessional, collaborating with virtuosic performer/creators to explore deeply personal material in bold new ways. She has directed new plays and premieres by Lauren Yee, Harvey Fierstein, Jen Silverman and Sarah Gubbins at venues including ACT, Theatreworks, San Francisco Playhouse and Z Space. Her work has been named to Best Of lists in the SF Chronicle and LA Weekly. Awards and nominations for her work include Princess Grace, Outstanding Solo Show & Outstanding Musical at the NYC Fringe, Ovations (Los Angeles), Theatre Bay Area and Bay Area Critics Circle. She is a graduate of the Yale School of Drama and co-creator of SCOTUS Theater.

The cast of Steve includes Joey Alvarado (Stephen), Greg Ayers (Steven), Clove Galiliee (Carrie), Daniel Redmond (Matt), Vaho (Esteban) and ShawnJ West (Brian).

The creative team includes stage management by Kerri Blake Cavanaugh, costume and props design by Jorge R. Hernandez, sound and lighting design by Brittany Mellerson, projection design by Sarah Phykitt, dialect coaching by Patricia Reynoso, and scenic design by Randy Wong-Westbrooke.
