Mark Twain Tonight” to Marin Center for one unforgettable performance. Begun as a college honors project, Holbrook first performed solo as
Mark Twain in 1954. In 1959 a refined version of his show opened off-Broadway to immediate acclaim. The New Yorker proclaimed it “Uncanny. A dazzling display of virtuosity.” Life Magazine opined “One of the Treasures of the American Theatre.” The show won an Obie Award in 1959, followed by a Tony Award and Drama Critic’s Circle Award in 1966.
